Never againPosted Apr 29, 2013
Pros: The staff
Cons: Sagging cheap bed
Location: A few good cafes / restaurants. Loved our guided walk to Fox glacier. The helicopter flight was not worth the $185 per person
Our first night was terrible, with a sagging bed, dingy room, and rot at the bottom of the false tiling material in the shower, with accompanying mouldy smell. The shower consisted of a circular curtain, no actual shower base. More reminiscent of a cheap hostel than an actual hotel. If there is a choice, I will never book with this hotel chain again. Fortunately, we were able to change our room for the second night - to a normal room! Small but refurbished with comfortable bed and proper bathroom facilities. The staff were lovely and obliging

Pros: the cold beer
Cons: small room and lack of free wifi/ no free breakfast
Location: not obvious which heartland hotel wasbooked (there are 2)
the room provided was a double room that was small, the best part was the bathroom. there was no air conditioning so had to open windows which was not safe as outside was the fire escape. the meals available were as expected so were ok. no free wifi but that seems to be a common problem in backwater nz

The walls are paper thin so you'll hear the folks next door.

Room Type is different upon check inPosted Dec 23, 2011 on Hotels.com
We confirmed a room with balcony via Hotel.com online booking but did not get this room. The excuse from the front desk was that they did not get this request via Hotel.com even though it is printed out in my paper confirmation. On probing, a further excuse was that we arrived too late and all balcony room was given out for that night. When ask for a in-kind compensation,e.g. a free breakfast, the answer was no as it is not their fault. So this was very disappointing for our stay. There is two heartland hotels in the fox glacier area. Arriving late, we found ourselves fumbling to find the right hotel as the one we went to was closed for the night. So we wasted some money on a cell phone call to the hotel to ask for location.

Hotel is not on the main highway as its address states, but shares a parking lot with the Fox Glacier guiding center. It is down the same road you take to get to Lake Matheson. The town is small enough that pretty much everything is walking distance. Fridge and coffee maker only, no microwave. Hotel restaurant has a limited vegetarian menu.

Good location, but that's about it.Posted Jan 24, 2011
Great location for going on the Fox Glacier Guiding trips as it was right next door. The hotel was a lot lower end than we had anticipated, with the shower being simply a curtain around an area of the bathroom floor which made for the rest of the bathroom getting really wet during the showers! I'd pick the upscale hotel in this town if you can afford it.
