Set back from the seafront on the western edge of the Esterel Massif, Fréjus Ville has many reminders of its Roman past. Founded by Julius Caesar in 49 BC, it was the oldest Roman city in Gaul. There is a 2nd-century amphitheatre although todays gladiatorial audiences come for rock concerts and bullfights a Roman gate, aqueduct and Roman theatre. Fréjus Plage has safe swimming and sandy beaches. There is a smart marina at Port Fréjus.
