Everything worked ok at this hotel and the staff in particular were very obliging cheerful and efficient. The evening entertainment was a bit basic and it a bit much to charge 10 euros extra for some evenings entertainment in what is otherwise a 5 star hotel. Also, charging to replenish the tea making facilities once the originals were used is something I have never come across before!

An enjoyable 5 star hotel in the heart of Funchal. Our room (505) overlooked the harbour and was ideal for watching the cruise ships come and go.
The cable car station and old town is only a 10 minute walk and the harbour is 3 minutes away. Taxi rank is at the side of the hotel.
The staff at the hotel are really friendly and nothing is too much trouble.

We have a time share at this hotel every May for 7 days. We enjoy the break so much that we usually add a couple of extra days which we spend either at the Pestana Grand or elsewhere on the island. The staff are very polite and accommodating, the facilities are clean and well maintained and the ambiance is peaceful and relaxing.

We thoroughly enjoyed our first stay in Madeira at this friendly hotel. It was convenient for the centre of town, but quiet and secluded. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The room was nicely appointed and clean and tidy, with the addition of our own outside garden area, with lovely, comfortable sun loungers. The walk through the gardens to the breakfast room made a lovely start to each day, and the choice at breakfast was vast! We had no problems with bugs, and the grounds received their monthly "spray" whilst we were there.
The deck bar and lounge were an added positive feature, with friendly staff and great views.
Overall, we loved staying here and may well do so again in the future.

The staff at the hotel were really very helpful right from check in. Special mention must go to Tatiana, the guest services lady who had brilliant knowledge of the island and the best places to go. The rooms were incredibly comfortable and very clean and the seating on the balcony was wonderful for watching the waves. The hotel was a bit of a labyrinth below the second floor where the pools and spa are and there needs to be better signage. The indoor pool felt like it had seen better days and was not all that welcoming.
The food was very good although it took a little while to get used to the staff clearing the plates away so quick....sometimes whilst we were finishing the last mouthfuls of food! Towards the end of our stay there were some waiters who asked if we had finished before taking the plate and that was much better....everyone should aim to do that. The buffets were varied and all in all offered good value for money.
I would certainly recommend this hotel whether looking for a lazy holiday by the pool or a more active one sightseeing. It is easy to get into the main town with bus stops right outside the hotel and they are the easiest and cheapest way to get around. It costs under 2 Euros for some way bus ticket. If you can cope with the hills it is a 20 minute walk to town.
All in all, great value, really clean, staff were friendly and helpful and great location.

Hotel Madeira was an excellent choice which was centrally located and close to all attractions and within walking distance of the marina, port and many excellent restaurants. The hotel was great value for money and the staff very welcoming.
Rooms were well decorated, very clean and adequate size although balcony was small.
Rooftop pool and bar was a real bonus and drinks and snacks very reasonable. Great views of Funchal. If an independent traveller then a good tip is to use the Aerobus to get between the airport and hotel as it is only 5 euros per person each way.

Funchal, capital of the Madeira Islands, curves along a harbor and rises up verdant mountain slopes. At the Mercado dos Lavradores market, vendors display basketry, produce, fresh fish, and profusions of flowers. The Madeira Wine Lodge, housed in a 17th-century monastery building, offers tastings and tours. A ride in a wicker toboggan down steep, narrow streets is a uniquely Funchal experience.
