From Furano, the major city of Sapporo is 55 miles (89 kilometers) to the west.
Vacationing in just one place, regardless of its popularity, usually only offers you a narrow glimpse into the broader textures and qualities of a region. So be sure to set aside enough time to enjoy Hokkaido's other natural and man-made attractions. Higashikawa and Shintoku are two more places worth seeing while you're in Hokkaido.
Approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) to the southeast of Furano is Obihiro, a regional city where you can visit Obihiro Wild Flower Garden, Obihiro Centennial Memorial Hall and JICA Obihiro International Centre. Obihiro Racecourse and Obihiro Zoo are just a sample of the many other interesting attractions that await.
If you are looking for indoor activities, make a beeline for Hokkaido's excellent history museums, indoor markets and nature museums. These are great spots to soak up some of the region's rich cultural tapestry and pick up an unusual gift or two. The area around Furano is blessed with some significant shrines, sure to move believers and non-believers alike.
See a side of Hokkaido many visitors will never see by spending time with a local guide on one of the guided nature walks, wildlife spotting tours and cycling tours. De-stress the way the locals do in the Hokkaido region. Try bird watching and camping while you are here.
As your trip finishes up, you'll be sure to bid the region a teary "Sayōnara"
