Try not to limit yourself to Genkai; the wider region contains a wealth of man-made and natural attractions just waiting to be explored. If you are after more places to explore, check out the Hikiyama Exhibition Hall and Karatsu Castle in the vicinity of Karatsu, which is roughly 6 miles (10 kilometers) to the west of Genkai.
Fukuoka, is another good spot to explore. It is about 30 miles (48 kilometers) from Genkai and offers a wide range of points of interest, for example Fukuoka Convention Center, Fukuoka Yafuoku Dome and Fukuoka Kokusai Center. Terumo Shrine, Myorakuji Temple and Genko Historical Museum are also worth a visit while you are in Fukuoka.
Get familiar with Japanese to charm the locals in Saga. "Isshoni odorimasenka?" is useful. In English, it means "Would you like to dance with me?" Another helpful sentence is "Benjo wa doko desu ka?" (Where's the toilet?).
Should you be fortunate enough to be visiting Saga on the 23rd of December, join the locals during the nation-wide Birthday of Emperor Akihito celebrations.
As you conclude your break, load up your gear and bid Genkai a fond Sayōnara (farewell).
