Recreation

Gillette is famous for providing energy to the nation through its coal, oil, and natural gas. Across the road from the Settle Inn, on the Camplex grounds, a variety of coal mining equipment is ready and safe for kids to climb on. Also check with the Chamber of Commerce, just down the road, for a facinating summer coal-mine tour. The drag-line digs the coal and 50 people can fit into the bucket. The haul-trucks have tires that tower above a man's head. Reclamation comes behind the mining and you'll see examples of areas restored with native plants.

“Best Hotel in the Gillette Area”

This is a great hotel and will definitely be my first choice for any future visits. The one and only drawback was that it’s not within walking distance to downtown Gillette, but still only a short ride to a huge variety of great department stores and excellent restaurants. The staff was friendly and accommodating and the hotel appeared to be brand new. Rooms were large and immaculately clean. The décor has been done in a western theme that really fits with the spirit of the area. The hotel is also directly across from the region’s major events center, The Camplex. The icing on the cake was the price, which was half what I’ve paid for comparable hotels in major cities. This hotel is really a gem that shouldn’t be missed by visitors to the Gillette area.

Area recommendations
Gillette has one of the lowest crime rates in the U.S. and all areas are safe, clean, and convenient to a good variety of department stores and restaurants. Gillette has a wonderful history and the down home folks I met are friendly and considerate. Devils Tower and Mount Rushmore are within a day's roundtrip driving distance with plenty of time left over for site seeing and the landscape is beautiful along the way. It's really difficult to pick just one area in Gillette as it's a relatively small city so everything is convenient, It's been a real pleasure to visit this wonderful little city and I'm truly looking forward to my next visit. Guess if I absolutely had to chose, my choice would be in the Camplex area just because that’s where the Settle Inn is located and is my number one pick of hotels in Gillette.
Getting there
Major interstate highway 90 from Rapid City runs through Gillette.
Getting around
Roads and streets are new and in great condition.
What to pack
Pack some warm clothes if you plan to visit during December or January. It can also be a bit windy at times.
Must see
Devils Tower and Mount Rushmore are relatively close. Also, The Rock pile Museum in downtown Gillette is a great place to learn about local and regional history with interesting exhibits covering local Native American history, coal mining, oil drilling, cattle ranching, and much more. Admission is free but donations are accepted.
Shopping
Walmart Super Center and Target are available. Several local stores are also available for shopping. Value Villia in downtown Gillette is also a great place for real bargins.
Dining
The two best upscale restaurants in Gillette are "The Prime Rib" and "The Chop House". Both are great but I would recommend "The Prime Rib" first. Also, Pokey's Bar-B-Q is good but stick with the chopped brisket as it's the best thing on the menu. Pokey's also offers several unusual selections including bear, buffalo, and even python. All the major fast food places are also available...McDonald's, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Starbuck's, etc. There are also several good Mexican and Chinese restaurants. My favorites were the local home style places of which there are several. The point is that there is a great variety of dinning choices in Gillette and you will defiantly be able to find what you want here…even for a smaller city. I recommend the buffalo burgers which you can try in several different places.
Events and shows
The Camplex hosts several events through out the year and is the major events center for the region.

“What a nice surprise!”

This hotel is very clearly one of the newest in Gillette. It was situated nicely within the community with tons of restaurants and convenience shopping nearby. There was ample parking, free wi-fi, an amazing complimentary breakfast, and even HE laundry facilities (make sure you bring HE detergent!). My only complaint was a foul smell coming from the faucet in our hotel bathroom, which we were assured wasn't normal and would be taken care of, but other than that we had a very pleasant stay on our way from Badlands to Yellowstone! Customer service was great!

“Great Hotel”

We stayed at this hotel on our way to CA. It was right in between Rushmore and Yellowstone so it was a good place to stop for the night. The city of Gillette was not much at all, but what do you expect in the middle of no where in Wyoming... The hotel was very comfortable and clean. Breakfast was just like any other hotel complimentary breakfast. We got good service by the front desk. Seemed like the hotel was relatively new.

“Will definitely return!”

I thought the hotel was brand new, due to the cleanliness both inside and out! the staff was polite, friendly, helpful and carried on pleasant conversation with all guests, and seemed to enjoy their jobs. The breakfast, was more than enough-with a variety of choices. The area was a bit remote, but very conveniently located directly across the street from the Cam Plex arena-walk just across the street. The hotel location was safe and quiet, and within a quick ride(5 mins) to "downtown" Gillette. The laundry room was clean and easliy accessible, with new/updated washer/dryer. Workout room small, but adequate when you are on the road-not a priority for me. The indoor pool and hot tub area was clean well kept. Enjoyed a very nice stay-will definitely return!

“Outstanding value!”

The Settle Inn was an outstanding road trip value. Just off the highway, the property is imaculate and appealing. We enjoyed the manager's reception, which was a salad bar and complimentary beverage. The next morning, breakfast was also provided. The staff was exceptionally professional and eager to please. The roomwas nicely decorated and had a large, comfortable bathroom. It was easliy one of the best lodging experiences of our 13-day road trip. I would definitely recommend this hotel

“New & Clean”

This was our first stay at a Settle Inn, and we were extremely impressed. The facility was spotless, and the room large & very comfortable. The impression was of a much more expensive hotel. Free laundry facilities were a bonus for us as were were in the middle of a two-week road trip, and our son loved the pool. The breakfast was good, standard fare. For a longer stay we might have wanted to be closer to restaurants and other options in town, but the price here was impossible to beat. We'd deifinitely stay again when passing through Gillette.

“A good place to stay a night.”

This was a hotel near the highway that was perfect for a one-night stay while we were driving to the West Coast. We enjoyed our stay and would go back again.
