“gentility on a budget”

A nice private hotel in a nice part of town. About 15 minutes' walk from the town centre and 35 minutes from the railway station. Located in a handsome old house dating from 1830 and retaining period features in public areas. Run by a married couple who are able and eager to please. Very quiet at night, unlike many budget hotels. Highly recommended in its price range.

Nice old-fashioned big room. Steep stairs to upper rooms could be an issue for elderly person. Good breakfast and service. Convenient parking. If you explore Cotswold by car - this is a great place, but it is over 20 min. of brisk walk to the city center.

“Definitely room for improvement”

Booked this hotel for one evening (22 October) whilst visiting friends in the area. From the outside, the hotel looked lovely. When we checked in, the friendly person on the desk advised us of breakfast times the following morning (two sittings - 8-8:45/9-9:45) and told us how to get to our room. We set off along a corridor, down some stairs, another corridor, through some doors, another dark corridor and finally to the most tucked away corner room in the very bowels of the hotel. The room was small (not a huge problem as we only needed to sleep there), but the toilet/wet room was very disappointing. No bath, just a shower head alongside the toilet and a shower curtain to pull around you. Decor was ok, but dated (the bin looked like it had been there as long as the hotel). When we got to the room that evening it was very cold. Attempted turning the radiator on (which involved being a contortionist to bend your arm round the back of the wooden cover), but found it didn't work. Tried calling the front desk but it's unmanned after 10:30pm so no answer. Despite the paper thin walls allowing you to hear the neighbouring room's every move/word and not the most comfortable bed, we got a decent night's sleep and opted for the second sitting at breakfast. The food was acceptable, but took 45-minutes to arrive. We mentioned the heating problem when checking out and were told, "sometimes there's a reason". Not sure what that meant, but an apology would've been better. Average at best!
