“English imitation of an American imitation of an English hotel”
The hotel has large, clean rooms, big tv, good bathrooms - typical of an American hotel chain. It is set among a large number of sports facilities (golf, archery, dry slope skiing, table tennis, squash, billiards, large pool with sauna, spa etc...) open to guests, some free, some charged. It sprawls down a hillside and there are steps everywhere in twos and threes as well as flights from one floor to another - ramps are fitted to the most important but it would be a logistical nightmare for wheelchair users and a difficulty for people with even modestly restricted mobility. The bar is comfortable and warm with imitation mill-stone fireplace. The restaurant, in a tastelessly reconstructed barn-style room, is buffet-style with good food (cold starters - I pigged on the New Zealand green mussels, a favourite of mine - roast meat dishes, puddings served individually to the table - the fixed price menu is for either two or three courses). Service there and in the hotel itself was mostly by rather young people and generally good natured but fumbling. Clientele when we were there on a Friday night included several parties of loudly cheerful and comradely golfers, getting in serious drinking and bonding. Not cheap altogether but the room was good value for money at the Expedia rate, especially if you stay for a full day and use the sports things.
