“Great views & friendly people”

Great amenities, views and friendly people. You never have to leave the resort because there's so much you can do. The hotel itself is outdated but well kept. This was our second visit and we intend to go again.

Family-friendly activities
They have multiple fancy pools, hot tubs and spraying fountain for the kids, fitness room, game room, minigolf, tennis, basketball, playgrounds, boating, ect. and even horseback riding. All except the horses are compelemtary. The last hotel we stayed at had minigolf but not for free.
Events and shows
The week we were there they played the movie cars2 one night and a comedian another. We were disappointed to miss ount on that because we weren't at the hotel then but it was nice to know for future that they plan activities all the time.

“A Jewel In The Woods”

Two words: Stay Here. This is our second stay at Shenandoah and we are looking forward to our next stay. My girlfriend and I go to VA about once a month for a family visit. We plan on bringing the kids in the Spring and Shenandoah is where we plan to stay. Indoor and outdoor pools, a lake for canoing, kayaking and paddle boats, horseback riding, tennis and basketball courts, a softball field, mini-golf. The restaurant on grounds, Izacs, is great. And for history, this place provides easy access to the Blue Ridge Mtns, Montpelier, Monticello, Ash Lawn, Charlottesville and other historic areas. Richmond is a bit of a drive, but not all that far. We stayed in the "motel" area, but there are cabins and yurts as well. And from what others have said, they are beautiful. One negative is that internet access is not free. It's not all that much, but not free. This is a time share resort. Don't let that deter you. The sales staff is not pushy. They ask if you want to participate in the sales presentation. And if your answer is "no," it is absolutely fine. The entire staff from check in to grounds crew is fantastic. True Southern Hospitality. Now, for all you "I need to find the closest shopping mall" folks, forget about it here, unless you are going to Charlottesville. You even need to travel down a back woods country road to get to this Jewel In The Woods. Looking forward to our next visit. And if you are planning a stay here, plan ahead. It books up quick. Happy Travels

Area recommendations
Be sure to visit Monticello and then The University of VA after. Thomas Jefferson founded the UVA and you really need to visit his home first. While in the area of the University, make sure to walk around the area, visit "The Corner" and take in some of historic Charlottesville. Oh, and while you are out at Monticello, plan to visit James Monroe's Ash Lawn. Don't forget to tour James Madison's Montpelier. And if you have a long weekend, take as long of a ride as you can down the Blue Ridge Parkway. Much more to see, but check on line for Charlottesville tourism to find more. And do the same for Richmond. We go mostly for the history, and there is a lot in VA, especially in the two cities above. Don't miss out on this beautiful state. If you have time, make VA a week long or longer vacation. Check on line for discounted multi-site discounts (Monticello/Montpelier), In Richmond, the Museum of the Confederacy and Tredegar Iron Works.

“Excellent older hotel.”

I gave the hotel a 4 in location as it is not really close to Charlottsville, our destination. This is the only fairly large city close by. In all other areas it deserves a 5. Although the room was small, it was extremely clean with a coffee maker, refrigerator, microwave, and hair dryer. Very quiet at night as they enforce their 10PM to 10AM quiet time. The indoor pool is small but the hot tub is of fair size although we took advantage of neigher. The grounds are beautiful -- horses, walking trails, general store. Being there in the late fall, the outdoor pools (large) were not open. Roads to the lodge are in good condition. It is about 35 minutes to Charlottsville on good 2 lane roads. Staff could not have been nicer. Attached restaurant's food was good to very good as was the service. The price was more than reasonable. I certainly would go back to this location any time in Northern Va. Excellent stay.

Area recommendations
Good place to stay when visiting President Madison or President Jefferson's home (Montacello) as the hotel is equal distance between each. Lots of good wine tasting places. Nice pedestrian mall in Charlottsville. BoDo's Bagels are not to be missed, excellent NY Bagels. Lots of history sites are in the area. The area seems to be safe and the people are friendly, readily giving directions to key places.
Getting there
We had a GPS (Garmin) to get us around. Very helpful for directions.

“Most beautiful surroundings ever”

I would go back to this hotel in a heartbeat. One flaw was I didn't see any elevators, it's only 2 floors but still! I like the fact that there is a coffee machine (with real cups), a microwave and refrigerator in each room. Another flaw is the bath towel, way too small. Anyway, the rooms are nice, the price is right and the surroundings are beautiful

“Old, old resort”

We had only a one-night stay and were in the lodge and not the cabins. The lodge has seen its day. The activity area was old and worn. The guest room was fresh but also quite dated. The grounds were very lovely. The staff was not very helpful. I asked about the computer next to the check-in desk and whether if I could use it for email. The response was "yes, if you can get it to work!". I could not and was sure that the staff behind the desk was not going to solve the problem. The restaurant had good food but the room was cold for dinner. For breakfast, we sat next to an outside door that patrons used often and kept the room chilly.

Area recommendations
No specifc recommendation. We chose this location because Richmond or Charlotsville were too expensive.

“"It Was Okay"”

The resort has lots to offer including boating, horseback riding, golfing and more. It is a little out of the way but the setting is very nice. Closest city is about 30 miles away. Not much open after 9 or 10 during the week. The time of year we went was not good. I think this is more of a summer vacation area.

When to go
Spring and Summer
Getting around
Will definitely need a car.
Must see
The surrounding wineries, Downtown Charlottesville, Blue Ridge, and Montepelier.
Dining
Many nice restaurants in the Charlottesville area.

“Nothing exceptional...”

I smelled Chlorine from the pool the moment I entered the door of the lodge. The room and bathroom was exceptionally small for what I was expecting at a "resort." No internet. Clock did not work. Two hardback chairs and a small table were in the room. The restaurant was VERY expensive, but the view was very good. The bed was VERY good, with lots of pillows. Good TV, except there was no TV listings. You had to go through all the channels to find anything. The outside views were breath-taking! The inside pool was fine. We heard a lot of noise above us. It was about 10 miles into Gordonsville for meals. OK visit though nothing special.

“Country Charm”

This resort has everything you could want, marina, pool, beautiful lake, game room, room amenities, etc. and the room was very clean. We stayed in the lodge in a one queen room which was very small. However, they managed to utilize every bit of space with their customers in mind. The room had a microwave, frig., iron, large TV, etc. Located in a lovely country location away from it all.

“Best hotel I've stayed at in a long time!”

This was a lodge set in a beautiful collection of fields, mountains, and lakes. There were camping cabins and yurts for other options, which we will be trying next time for sure! The location was close to where we needed - we were skydiving in Orange, VA - yet the lush scenery made us feel like we were far from civilization. The pool, hot tub, two saunas and activity room were the best I've seen in a long time. We appreciated the personal service given to us by the concierge, as she answered any questions we had and gave us suggestions for local restaurants to try. The room itself was very comfortable - an oversized plush chair for reading, and real porcelain coffee cups added to the charm. Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a weekend getaway, or a weeklong hiatus.

Area recommendations
Skydive Orange, in Orange VA. If you ever want to jump out of a plane, this is the place to do it!
Dining
Silk Mill Grille in downtown Orange, VA was excellent. Listed as a simple BBQ joint, this was far more. We got steak and rockfish, crab dip and a great beer. It is in an old silk mill factory from WWII. The food was excellent and service very personable.

“Great Getaway”

This is a very quiet out of the way location in central Virginia. It's also a resort with cabins and activities. The room I had was a little small, but it was comfortable, quiet and clean.

Area recommendations
The town of Gordonsville is fairly close and there are many wineries in the area.
