Isolated mountain resort far from beachesPosted Feb 21, 2014
Pros: The bungalow was very nice and comfortable. The grounds were lovely. The Spa was clean, relaxing and professional. We enjoyed the RTV trip.
Cons: Screens should fit the windows in the bungalow. Bring and use Deet.
Location: Remote vertical resort under a volcano. Going to the beach was at least two hours one way. Activities provided. Too far too leave and come back
Lovely place with wonderful spa and adventurous activities. Reviews do not tell you how far it is or about the perilous road there off the highway. It is also a lot of vertical walking to get from place to place, e.g., bungalow to meals, pool, spa. We rented a car thinking we could make day trips. Best to plan and stay put for the number days booked and let a service bring you into the mountains. Large tour groups are brought in for a few days and the dining room, unfortunately, coverts to buffets. We were not told we had a choice to order off the menu and in a quieter atmosphere. Would have like to see more of Costa Rica.

Pros: It is in a beautiful setting. Lots of wildlife and beautiful grounds. The staff are very nice and the rooms were nicely furnished and clean .
Cons: See above -- basic maintenance of guest rooms and housekeeping needs improvement.
This hotel is in a uniquely beautiful setting -- the pictures on the hotel website don't do it justice. The spa and sauna/mudbath/pool facilities are excellent. Very relaxing. One morning we had an OK breakfast, the next morning we had a great buffet breakfast. We had dinner at the hotel one night and 4 of 5 of us had excellent meals. The 5th had a steak so tough she couldn't cut it (we were not charged for that meal). Herein lies the problem for this hotel - lack of consistency. We (5 friends) paid a lot of money to stay in two jr suites (high up on the hill for the view) -- one suite was excellent the other mediocre. The mediocre suite had a mediocre view, a shower that didn't function, termite-damaged, rotten deck/window frames, insufficient towels/washcloths, a safe that didn't work, on-demand hot water trickled into the jacuzzi so you couldn't fill it with enough water for a bath, water in the jacuzzi when we checked in (ugh), a leaking toilet, amenities were not restocked. The other jr suite was everything you would have expected when paying top dollar for a room. The issue here is not "this hotel isn't for everyone". The issue is some rooms do not get basic services.

Nice resort nestled in the forest and mountainPosted Aug 25, 2013
Pros: Very good location near Liberia; great Wi-Fi access in the restaurant and main entry; very good swimming pool and wet steam sauna
Cons: The staff quality is excellent; however the property needs to retain adequate staffing during peak dinner time
Location: Only 50 minutes door-to-door from downtown Liberia
Very large property; beautiful cabins; great pool and hot-spring sauna; good food

Luxury Costa Rican style!Posted Aug 13, 2013
Pros: The pool area, hammock on the deck and the howler monkeys
Cons: The food and the air conditioner
Location: Stunning location high on a mountain top with spectacular sunsets and a pool area that is to die for
The grounds and facilities at Borinquen are top notch. The pool area is spectacularly beautiful and the steam room and mud baths were a real treat. Having the howler monkeys visit in the late afternoon only added to the magic of the place. Our bungalow was quite large with nice amenities and the hammock on the deck was enjoyed by all. Borinquen is truly a bit of luxury. If you are mobility challenged at all, or have difficulty walking long or steep distances note that this resort is built on a very steep hill and that you have to walk up and down to all the facilities or call for the golf carts to pick you up. The food overall was quite average and a bit of a contrast to the otherwise very luxurious experience.

Great relaxing hotel!!Posted Mar 29, 2013
Pros: Fun activities
I rated this a 4 out of 5 only because it could never be as perfect as a huge resort but this place was AWESOME! We LOVED it! We had stayed at the beaches for a week and this was the perfect end to our Costan Rican vacation. Very relaxed. We went ziplining on the canopy tour and I highly recommend it. Our kids (10 and 13) had so much fun. Our dinner in the restaurant was very good as well. Anyone complaining should think about the logistics of getting resources to this hotel. It is not exactly close to anything and the staff did an excellent job of making us feel welcome and relaxed.

Mountain Hotel - Lots to do and seePosted Mar 25, 2013 on Hotels.com
It takes about an hour to get here from the airport but it is well worth it. This hotel offers villas nestled in the side of a mountain. The grounds are breathtaking. There are several pools, horseback riding and trails all on the grounds of the hotel. I wish I could have spent a few more days.

Beautiful mountain resortPosted Mar 22, 2013 on Hotels.com
Lovely hotel in an isolated mountain setting. Bungalows are well maintained, bed is conmfortable and staff most accommodating. Breakfast is a little sparse and dinners are not really exciting but tasty. The hotel has a spa on premises where my husband and I had excellent massages. There is also a natural steam hut, hot spring baths and hot mud pots. The pool area is not up to the hotel standards-mismatched chairs and not an umbrella in site. While many of the bungalows are on a steep hill, if you can't do the walk the staff will shuttle you up or down the hill in a golf cart and are most gracious about that. We saw monkeys one night and a toucan in the trees.
