“Costa Rica is Beautiful no matter where you stay!”
Great small resort! Service is fabulous! Food is better than a lot of resorts ive been to. Resort has a lot of hills and walking but our room was in building 17 which is as far from the lobby as you can get. Kept us from getting too fat on the trip. A few buildings show signs of the resorts 30 year age but they are making great strides to fix the place up. Avoid the invitation to view their vacation club! Very pushy salespeople who insist you sign NOW. If your looking for natural beauty and a relaxing, quiet resort this is your place, If you need a magnificent room with white sand beaches and crystal clear water then keep looking.
“not the best, but good for the price”
When we arrived our room was not ready so we were shown around and given some advice on where to go on our stay and offered to become "VIP" if we took the 90 min tour and lecture about their condos that were availible. Welcome drinks were pretty good. room took about an hour or more to be ready. When we first got to the room the A/C was not working and a maintenance man was radioed to come fix it. we left the room and when we came back it was fixed and nice and cold. we had upgraded to the romantic package and recieved champagne, fruit plate, breakfast in bed, and couples massage which was awesome. Both restaraunts were good, but the asian one was AMAZING! Buffet was ok, something different every night, and the snack bar was pretty good. Chicken tacos and pasta station was the best. drinks were GREAT! friendly staff and excellent bartenders...Edwin was by far the best. He had our refils ready before we were even done with the last ones. back in the room the tv remote wasn't working so they brought a new one and it was fine. by the 3rd day it was kinda later at night (9pm) and i went to take a shower and there was no hot water...called and was told that it was "kinda late". on the last day there was also no hot water and i called and someone was sent out and spent 20 min running the water and i was told 5 min for hot water...never happened and then i had to check out. if you want to do any activities i would reccommend the ATV/Canopy tour it was AWESOME!!! volcano tour is long
“Costa Rica”
I felt the hotel was very dated. Really needs a facelift. Rooms need to be gutted and redone. The staff is friendly but cannot reccomend staying there.
“Hotel Best beach veiew not Good Food”
Hotel People real nice persons they will do all they can to serve you Hotel location is good if you want to be away of the city but there is anything close to hotel nerest town is about 20 minutes and Taxis are Expensive make sure you have cash becasue there is no ATM at the hotel. Hotel food is not Good they serve prety mush same food avery day in diffrent presentiations, food sasoning is not good. Hotel had exelent view and actual beach the best I saw in Costa Rica
“Know before you go”
There is good and bad at the Occidental Grand Papagayo. Good - Condition of resort grounds is excellent Food is at least average; Italian-themed restaurant is pretty good Service level is good overall (front desk is exception) Nice beach Good location - close to airport and base for excursions. Bad - The rooms. If all you want from your room is a place to sleep (in less than ideal comfort), you might be ok. Shower was "painted" with something that looked like automotive undercoating. No shower curtain. Limited towels to mop up water. No amenities - shampoo, conditioner, etc. Beach / pool loungers are cheap and worn. Expedia generously lists as 3.5 stars. If you see anything listing a higher rating, don't believe. Do your homework on this property. And if you go, set reasonable expectations.
“Avoid this hotel!”
The staff was unfriendly and unhelpful. Begged for water bottles for three days as our refrigerator was never stocked until the fourth day. No PADI dive facility was onsite despite ads that it was. Poolside beds were always saved by 7 am, even though the people often wouldn't show up until hours later. There was always a wait to be seated to eat. One night we couldn't eat until almost closing as there was a wedding at the hotel and the staff never made plans to accommodate non wedding guests. We had a hard time getting towels in the bathroom and we were only ever given one wash cloth. Calls to stock the fridge, fix the air conditioner, get towels or whatever were answered but ignored. After multiple calls, we had to demand attention in person @ the front desk. NEVER AGAIN!
“Nice small resort, cheep rooms are crap.”
The room we were placed in upon check-in was crap. Their was a questionable lock on the patio door, terrible sheets and a worn out blanket on the bed, and seriously the hardest bed I have ever slept on. The next day the resort upgraded us into a nicer room and we no longer had any complaints. We talked to other couples at the resort who experienced the same thing. Crap room on check-in, complain, and get a better room. The room we were initially placed in was embarrassing.
“Just OK”
Food is good, staff is friendly and helpful, but the overall condition on the resort could have been better. I don't think we would go back there, but we aren't telling our friends to stay away either...just to lower their expectations. It really was just ok.
“Excellent service”
Personnel was great, service excellent. Bathroom was clogged with water draining slowly. Otherwise, we had a great time
“Do your homework, it's not for everyone”
If you're just going here for the resort, food, pool, beach, RETHINK your trip. Spend less and do that at a more luxury resort somewhere else. If you go here, it's because you want to see and enjoy Costa Rica. This resort is fine, but it's not luxury.
