Excellent Resort

Pros: The quality of the food and drink, both top notch. The staff is great from the general manager to the bus girls and guys. The room was perfect.
Cons: Some different entertainment in the evenings. Only had a great local singer one night, more local entertainment would be nice.
Location: Palo Verde National Park with river boat ride, see monkeys, iguanas, crocs (not shoes), birds, have lunch included. Coco Beach, sunset cruise.
The resort is close to a beach but you have to know the tides as high tide covers the beach, the resort gives you a tide schedule. Be in shape as the resort is on a hill side and there can be walking involved.They have a shuttle to take you where ever you want, we liked walking. The food was some of the best we have had at an all inclusive resort. The buffet was excellent, lots of choices and lots of Costa Rican food, which is very good. The other restaurants are Italian and Oriental. Both are very good. Remember you are in Costa Rica and their version of these types of restaurants might not be the same as yours, but the food is darn good! The staff are top notch, and will get you whatever you need or want, the drinks flow freely and you can snack as much as you want all day at the pool restaurant. The pool is nice, small but designed well. We relaxed, ate, drank, danced, loved! What else do you need!

beach and pool are great .food and retaurants are great .staff pleases at all times far from everything but if u want to rest u can really do this here

Pros: Staff was very accommodating.
Cons: Improve on description and amenities of hotel on line.
Location: Tour agent -Gray Line - was fabulous as were the tours........Took tour to Nicaragua, 1/2 day boat ride, adventure (included horse back riding, 10 zip
I stayed at 2 other Occidental hotels, Xtapa, Dom. Rep.............those were awesome. Food and variety was like staying at a budget resort......

Beautiful resort with amazing staff

We loved this resort! We upgraded to a Royal Club room and it was amazing. The pool area is great and the beach is beautiful! Food was great, especially in the specialty restaurants - make sure to try the Italian! The best thing was the staff- everyone was super friendly, super helpful, willing to go above and beyond at all times. Bring bugspray- Mosquitos like this resort too.

Beautiful hotel, not good food or beach.

Pros: The resort itself, and staff, people we met, fun activities at pool and evenings.
Cons: The food at the restaurants needs to include some nice grill meats -- and stop putting "sweet" dripping sauces on everything....
Location: There were fun activities at the pool, surrounding nature walks, and evening games and music.
The food at the restaurants was poor, real disappointment. They had Mexican, Oriental and Italian restaurants -- each of these were below standard. The plates were decorated and looked gourmet -- not much substance -- not much meat! No grilled meat options for steak, fish, chicken. The same ceviche. rather than a selection! Also, you had to make reservations in advance, and only eat at restaurant 4 times. (Which turned out fine since we cancelled our fourth dinner reservation after deciding that neither restaurant was worth going twice to.) The best option was the International Buffer for breakfast, lunch and dinner ....

Nice natural condition

Hotel is built in a very nice natural place. Trees, oqean, sunset, environment are meravillous. We stayed in a four floors building. No elevator at all. To go to eat, on beach , pool and everywhere else has to up and down stairs and stairs very uncomfortable , wide... Service in room : not satisfactory, never get what you need. Food: same every day Activities: very poor. But people are very friendly and very kind there.

Nice Hotel for Adult relaxing time

Pros: The friendliness and willingness of the staff to make your stay a pleasant one.
Cons: Sinks with adecuate drains and plugs in the older buildings. Add a grilled fish (pescado a la plancha), to snack menu
Location: For the excursions to the rain forest areas of Arenal, Monteverde and Palo Verde and at the same time a beach experience a good location.
My first day impression of my 14 day stay was a bit dissappointing due to the lack of a few important details (plugs for the sinks, enough parasols at the pool, hooks to hang wet towels in bathroom) but these were all overcome with a friendly plea to a very willing staff of people who did everything possible to make your stay as pleasant as possible. On the third day we had more than enough shade at the pool. The food was very good, the buffet setting was well set up. The specialty restaurants served delicious gourmet plates.

Vacation time-Thank you Grand Papagayo Resort

Pros: The staff was always very friendly. The hotel and grounds was smaller so walking far was never an issue. Nice pool. Great drinks. Great food.
Cons: The poolside beverage service was a joke-rarely seen. Perhaps add 1 or 2 more. I thought giving a tip would help but never saw him again.
Location: Outside the gate not a thing! However take a taxi into nearby Coco Beach to pick up any souvenirs you want, typical caribbean stuff. Worth it though.
This is an adults only resort. Smaller than most but in a good way. Upon arrival the room was ready and very spacious. The staff was always friendly. Several reviews have painted some negative stuff on food, water pressure and petty stuff that wasn't the case. I upgraded thru Expedia and got the ocean view room it's worth the money as the room is bigger. The rooms are clean and well kept, the in room fridge could use more than 2 of each drink though. The Oriental Restaurant was perhaps the best one-excellant food and atmosphere. The buffets feature typical all inclusive meals. In early hours prior to 11 might as well forget getting an alcoholic beverage as the bars don't open generally. But when the bars open the drinks are well made with friendly service. Take a tour. I took the Blue River and Hot Springs which was around a 2 hr one way trip but worth it. Also did the sunset cruise which was good, the tours are not part of the hotel but offered in an office near the pool. March is the dry season and most likely a quieter time of year as the hotel wasn't overcrowded. The clientel was mostly Americans and Canadians with a few Europeans. There were no children and adults only holds true. The beach isn't much because the waves aren't typical with much force, also it was to dangerous as the shore is covered in large rocks. Overall I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Very few negatives. If I could go back right now I'd be on the next plane. If you want relaxation this is it.

Very nice all inclusive adult only resort

We had a very enjoyable experience at the Occidental Grand Papagayo all inclusive resort in Costa Rica. The resort was extremely clean, staff very accommodating and the food (not overly plentiful) was was prepared and fesh daily. As the accommodations are spaced out, a lot of walking is required which we enjoyed. If not, resort transportation is readily available. Overall a great place to stay.

Not at all worth the money

Pros: Steven at the Tiki Bar
Cons: Pool-swim up bar, friendlier staff. don't charge 35 dollars for a lost card for a pool towel, open seating at the restaurants
Location: Did not go through the resort for anything as they charged much more than Carlos at the beach.
Let me start off by saying Costa Rica is beautiful and if it wasn't for the country and the friends we had with us we may not have stayed the week at this hotel. I will explain why I don't think this resort is worth anywhere near the amount of money they charged us. They do not have a swim up bar and many of the chairs around the pool are for Royal Club members. They only have one person serving the pool so imaging how warm your drink will be when they bring an entire tray full 30 minutes later. There is four bars. One in the restaurant near the pool that will not let you in with wet clothes(how stupid is that) and a Tiki bar halfway between the pool restaurant bar and the beach. The person serving that bar is required to serve the people at the bar and then go to the beach, which is a long walk down stairs, take orders and then serve those orders to those on the very small beach. The third bar is at the top of the resort and it is decent. The forth bar is the disco bar which opens after the third bar closes so there really is only three bars. Terrible staff is not even worth talking about. To make a reservation they will treat you terrible and if you stay 4-7 days you only get two reservations so you can only got to two of the ala carte restaurants. They keep more than half the tables open for Royal Club Members and will not give you seat if you are 15 minutes late. The only good thing I can say about the resort is Steven that works at the Tiki Bar is great.

Those guests who have opted to pay for the Royal Club package do have access to more amenities. However, the quality of service and treatment of ALL our guests, regardless what category of room or vacation package they have, is our number one priority and it is never our intention to make any guest feel otherwise. For safety reasons, to avoid falls and for the comfort of all our guests, wet clothes are not permitted in the snack bar and restaurants. Normally guests may enjoy three reservations in the specialty restaurants each week however, if there is availability, we are happy to make further reservations for our guests. If you give us a chance to earn back your trust, I can assure you that we will do our best to give you the great hotel experience that so many of our guests have grown so fond of. Kind regards
