Relaxing beach and nature experience.

Posted Mar 2, 2015
Pros: Views, proximity to airport, and staff.
The beach was quite nice, better than we expected except at the high tide times. Wild life was plentiful and we saw quite a few bird species on site as well as monkeys, coatis, and raccoons. Adventure tours were offered on site and on the beach. Specialty restaurants were very nice and well worth making reservations (oriental, italian, and mexican) for the evening meal. The hotel offers rides to and from rooms or one can walk for excerise depending on your personal preferences. We walked for relaxation, excercise (all inclusive calories), and for photography opportunities. We stayed in building 16 and were pleased with it. Buildings 1 and 2 are closer to the pool, restaurants, bars and music but probably not as quiet.

Unbelievable nature experience

Posted Feb 23, 2015
Pros: I loved that I could go anywhere I wanted and feel safe. Wildlife was abundant and intimate setting made everyone so friendly! Loved the beach!
Cons: Food choices small for a buffet. Screen access to balcony so we could have left our door open. Nightly entertainment just ok. No ATM on site.
Location: Conveniently located 9 miles from Liberia airport. Just used taxi to avoid all the stops. Many excursions located within a 1-1 1/2 hour distanc
This was an unbelievable vacation. Costa Rica is gorgeous and we did not know that you will NOT see rain November thru March! There is a lot of hills to navigate but you can request transport very quickly from your room and the hills are what give you the breathtaking ocean views. The beach was not private but this allowed you to walk and swim as far as you wanted. There were a few locals but they did not bother you. The beach is a bit rocky so if you don't snorkel, it may not be for you, but if you do, the snorkeling was incredible!!! I saw way more from my beach than on the snorkeling trip. The wildlife was incredible. Monkeys and iguanas and raccoons and some animal that resembled a lemur. Birds, oh my! Dinner and lunch food just ok but we are not there for the food, we are there for the experience so when it is great, we consider it a bonus. It was our anniversary and we booked the romance package, which gave us our ocean view, bottle of champagne, couples massage, a breakfast in bed and a romantic dinner. Can't say enough about Costa Rica. Just prioritize your food and beach needs before committing to your hotel. Pool was great but no beach bar. Staff did an excellent job of serving drinks both at the pool and right on the beach. Stayed 10 days and bed comfortable the whole time! Board games and covered seating area located at lobby with bar and breathtaking views.

Great all-inclusive in Costa Rica.

Posted Feb 18, 2015
Pros: Staff, rooms, alcohol selection
Cons: The food could be better.
Location: Great location in the dry region of Costa Rica. Not close to rainforests.
The staff is exceptional. The food was the only downside, it was decent but nothing to go wild about. Our room was incredible with an amazing view.

Only a 5-star in someone's imagination....

Posted Feb 18, 2015
Pros: Specialty restaurants were excellent. Bedding and pillows were top-notch. Staff was nice.
Cons: Everything else.
So, for those who want to skip the essay, here's the Cliff's Notes for this resort: Pros: Super people Excellent bed/bedding Specialty restaurants are outstanding Cons: Everything else. This simply is not a 5-star resort. - multiple lights bulbs blown in the room upon check-in -hot water not working (quickly corrected) -minibar not really a fridge, it's a Koolatron -poor selection in said Koolatron: local beers, 2 soft drinks, and 4 waters (small bottles) and inconsistently refilled -no clock/radio -no place to hang hand-towel near sink -non-existent water pressure -creaky balcony furniture -screechingly loud sliding door and blinds -pool and beach lounge chairs old and ratty and overdure for replacement -beach shared with locals, including children -insufficient dining space. 20 min line-up for buffet -poor drink service at pool (20 mins). Worse at beach (40 mins) -poor quality/selection of food at buffet/snack bar -no real entertainment/minimal activities -no washroom near beach -no tables for lounge chairs at beach -no ice machines, has to be delivered to your room etc. etc, etc Check-in was smooth. The Room: So the blown light bulbs were the first things we noticed upon reaching our room. Not a cause for major concern but indicative of the general level of quality here. Wouldn't dream of making sure everything is in working order between occupants. No hot water, quickly corrected. Then the so-called fridge jumps out at you. For anyone who knows what a Koolatron is,

Winter get away

Posted Feb 11, 2015
Pros: Beach and attentiveness of the staff
Location: Coco beach has all the shopping about 15 minute cab ride. The hotel also has four different Tour operators offering half day and full day tours
The resort complex is spread out over a hill overlooking a bay of the pacific. The facilities included a great pool and a beach. The beach had gentle wave action because being a bay and the beach offered shade under trees.

Occidental Grand Papagayo Resort

Posted Feb 1, 2015
Pros: The grounds and the buffet staff.
Cons: The resort needs a complete makeover.
Location: The tours we were interested in were 3 - 3 1/2 hours from the hotel.
The shower would not drain and the toilet would not flush in our first room. The room was not cleaned until about 4 PM and was only cleaned because I found a maid and asked her to clean it. We attempted to talk to the Customer Service Manager (CSM) but he could not be contacted. When we finally got him he apologized and told us he would move us to a upgraded room. The room was larger but not much better. No fan or AC in the bathroom, no alarm clock and shower was slow to drain. We went to take a shower and found only one wash cloth, had to call the CSM and have a second wash delivered. We booked the Concierge package which included a bottle of wine, however there was not cork-screw or wine glasses. The view from the room included a view of the run down and crumbling roof tops of different buildings in the resort. Because we booked for only 6 days we were only allowed two visits to the ala- cart restaurants; these restrictions are not advertised on their web site. We were told that the restaurants we very busy and should book reservations early in our stay. We waited in line for almost an hour to book reservations at the Italian and Oriental Restaurants. For some reason you are not allowed to call the restaurants to book reservations. We first went to the Italian restaurant and waited about one and half hours for our dinners to arrive. The dinners were not even warm. Not even an apology from the wait staff. It got worse but ran out of type space cannot continue

Lot's of ups and downs on this mountain.

Posted Jan 29, 2015
Pros: The staff was friendly and accomodating. Their English was impressive, and they tried hard to solve any problems.
Cons: The hotel needs an upgrade. The hot-tub was a cold-tub. Our room was poorly lit. Reservations for dining we're tricky, as the restaurants are small
Location: There's list to do in Costa Rica. The canopy tour - zip lines, huge water slide, horse back ride, mud bath, hot springs and native lunch-was da bomb.
This is an older property built on the side of a very steep hill. The rooms are located in four or five unit bungalows. There's lots of hills or steps to climb to reach the lobby/restaurants. I definitely would have older, less agile folks avoid this place. But the staff does hustle around in small trucks - golf carts would be much better- to get you where you're going. The food is good, but selection is smaller than most resorts we've visited. I would go so far as to say that this place is downright quaint, intimate, friendly, but 'limited'.
