It all depends on which room you get!Posted Jan 8, 2014
Pros: Staff were helpful
Cons: The food is just about OK, I wouldn't stay in for dining
Location: This is about 20km north of the popular Playa Grande and Tamarindo, great for surfing and beach atmosphere. Gulf of Papagayo is not for surfing.
When we originally checked in here, we were assigned to the 600 block of rooms, which are older and smell a bit, and didn't have hot water. We asked for a room change and were assigned the 700 block, which are wonderful (at the same price). The food is just OK.

it seems like these folks are not interested in the long term success of this resort. they go cheap on the strangest amenities. for example, we asked for towels for the pool. they handed us ancient towels with holes in them. the cushions on the outdoor furniture were also ripped and quite dirty. the bedspread in the room was also stained. none of these issues ruined our vacation but we thought it was unfortunate that the management at sol papagyo is not interested in details. on the plus side, the staff was very friendly and we found the other guests to be friendly and pleasant as well. we took advantage of tours and didnt spend too much time at the resort. there are many things to explore in costa rica so i would not spend too much time at a resort anyway. get out and explore.

not a nice hotelPosted Jan 1, 2013
Cons: remote, no dining options, needs to be completely redone. but basically just too far from Coco beach.
Location: not good
Nothing horrible about this hotel, but definitely wouldn't go back. You are stranded out in a remote stretch of hotels, nowhere near any authentic Costa Rican experience. Nowhere to eat except the big buffet that sits out all day. It wasn't good. The staff was friendly, but just not a nice hotel.

5-day vacation in Costa RicaPosted Mar 24, 2012
The hotel is simple and doesn't propose any activity but the location is perfect, the rooms are clean and quiet and the staff is very helpful and present. The food is good and served in buffet so there is choice ! View on ocean and the monkeys like to come tell us hi !

Really enjoyed the stay at Sol Papagayo resort at Panama Beach/Costa Rica. Not only was service really nice, but the kitchen staff was very accomodating to us, since we are vegetarians. The location was awesome, in the forest, and to our surprise when we were having breakfast in an open dining room, a troupe of howler monkeys about 20 of them, came by and gave us a show on the trees above us. Incredible. Also as we were taking pictures of the monkeys, we noticed the calm bay and the ocean right there, 30 feet from where we were standing by the pool. Safety also was a great asset to this hotel. Will be back again .

Nice and good attentionPosted Jan 3, 2012
Pros: Nature and animals
Cons: Beach and mangrove were dirty but the hotel should be more concern about this
Location: Beach and mangrove were dirty
Its a small but beauty hotel, its the kind of hotel that you should visit, its more costarrican style, lots of nature and animals surrounds it. The hotel should be more concern about taking care of the beach and the mangrove. Local people are not aware about garbage and sometimes it looks dirty and its a shame to look it that way.

Not All Inclusive - Please Read carefullyPosted Dec 5, 2011
Location: Coco Beach Ginger Restaurant
The grounds are surrounded by trees where you can see holler monkeys and iguanas running around freely. The room itself was very clean but you can tell it was a bit outdated and could def use some renovations, but served its purpose. The sheets were very uncomfortable. I would have been better off sleeping on the floor which crossed my boyfriends mind the first night there. Although it advertises itself as all inclusive, this hotel is not all inclusive if you do not purchase the correct room plan which is the most expensive plan. The drinks at the bar were pretty strong and the location is a 5 minute walk to the beach, but a 15 to 30 minute drive to Coco beach which is where "the nightlife" is located. If you are looking for night life then you are better off staying near Coco beach or renting a car if you choose to stay here as a cab ride will cost you 20 dollars one way (from the hotel to Coco beach). If you look around you can get a cab ride to Coco beach for 14 to 15 bucks. At these prices you are better off renting a car. The employees were helpful. If you have any questions they are able to help you but do not offer up info when you first arrive such as a map of the grounds and a run down of the resort. All in all we got what we paid for. I would recommend travelers bring their jogging shoes if there are interested in exploring around the premises and other surrounding beaches. Ginger Resturant close by is also reccomended. Again bring jogging shoes.
