“Better than I expected”
I've stayed at the White Swan probably dozens of times since 1981. We even stayed there when we adopted our Chinese daughter in 1998. It has been renovated several times over the years and looks good right now. Since the American Consultate moved it has lost some charm. It is "nice" but not great, a bit pricey for what it offers. The neighborhood has declined and it isn't really fun to stroll the streets around the hotel. if you go however, its is worth it to visit one little shop near the former American Consulate owned by a young man named "Dong" who will charm you with his English, tell you tales about saving street cats and dogs and make you tea while you shop. One bad note - we had a very bad experience in the hotel's restaurant. The manager and the receptionist were rude. When we complained, we were met with blank stares.
“Terrible Service”
I requested a room close to the elevator due to mobility problems, I was given a room furtherest from the elevator. I had the "Do not disturb" sign on the door, and house keeping keeps ringing the door bell and phone to ask if I need the room cleaned. I wanted to exchange money into RMB, the hotel did not have sufficient cash to cover the exchange. The bed smelled bad. The none-smoking floor had smokers staying in it. I could go on, but you get the idea.
