"Comfortable and convenient to Beijing's third ring"
On checking in, we were told that we were booked in the Garden Tower, which was an old structure from 1987 and showed its age, and were encouraged to upgrade to the Valley Tower, that was only a few years old. I was surprised at such a significant disparity in the condition of the two towers, especially at the Shangri-la. I am glad we upgraded as the rooms in the Valley Tower are spacious and well appointed. From a walk-in closet to a bathroom with a TV built into the mirror, there are a lot of delighters. The staff is very friendly and eager to help. I didn't have the opportunity to eat at the hotel so I can't comment on their food service.

Hotel itself was beautiful. Room very nice, as nice as you would find anywhere. Staff very friendly and very helpful, but few spoke English. They helped arrange cabs and made great suggestions for walking tours of Beijing. Food in hotel excellent. The swimming pool and health club is first class. I would highly discourage renting a car, no parking anywhere and driving a little crazy. Location of hotel is not near shops or restaurants so taxi or subway necessary to get to downtown or other sites. Same for restaurants, only one about 2 blocks away. Taxis are bad but subway only $3 anywhere. The city itself is a bit grimy but the people are almost universally helpful and friendly. The historical sites are amazing. You can often find unofficial guides at the sites and strike a rate there. We were fortunate and had no smog.

Must have been a great hotel when new, but now to rooms were a little shabby and tired and smelled of smoke. In fact the whole hotel smelled of smoke even the restaurant. People smoke everywhere, making relaxing in the impressive lobby with a drink impossible unless you too are a smoker.
This is not a hotel really for tourists but more for Chinese business men and women. Breakfast definitely catered to the Chinese palate and while this was not a problem for me it may be for many western tastes.
Free internet was slow and almost useless.

The hotel staff are friendly, reception and service desks personnel. The apartment rooms we stayed are quite old, but clean room though. Plus point is the room size is extremely huge. Be careful that the bathrooms are non sound proof, I can clearly hear my neighbours talking.

"Very good hotel across from a modern shopping mall"
A very nice luxury hotel. It is across from a modern shopping mall with a supermarket, which is convenient. The rooms were very modern and the breakfast was excellent. This is my second stay at this hotel and I would highly recommend it. It's a luxury hotel on par with luxury hotels in other world capitals, at a very reasonable price. The area is not close to any tourist attractions, but it is not far from the Babaoshan subway station so it is possible to be in the centre of Beijing (i.e. Tianamen square) in about 30 minutes on the subway (probably an hour by taxi).

This was a lovely hotel situated in very busy area but 10 minutes fast walk to nearest subway. Excellent shopping centre on same road. Plenty of authentic dining in centre and great supermarket in basement for supplies. Gym small but functional. Swimming pool excellent and plenty of room for lap swimming. Breakfast a multi -cultural affair with everything one could possibly want.

Dense forest, tranquil parks, and historic temples await visitors to Haidian. Explore the expansive gardens and secret ruins of the Summer Palace, or take a quiet stroll through the University District to escape the bustle of Beijing. Five Pagoda Temple's beautiful Diamond-Throne Tower dates to the 15th century. The district’s spring festivals feature folk art and traditional activities.
