Hotel were very unreasonablePosted Dec 5, 2013
My friends and I were scheduled to go to Halong Bay 2 days after typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines. All weather forecasted that Haiyan will land near Halong Bay. Vietnamnese gov't shut down the bay area, and many roads to Halong Bay afraid that the rain will cause mud slide. We had no choice but cancel our trip to Halong Bay. Hotel refused to refund us, or give us credit to Novotel. We asked for credit for future stays at Novotel, and they even refused that. Novotel does not care about customer safety.

Nice place and only place to stayPosted Nov 25, 2013
Pros: Food was very good.
Cons: Perhaps bathrooms could be a bit cleaner
Location: Apart from the boat trip there is nothing to do and restaurants virtually nonexistent for western visitors.
We stayed 2 nights we were a party of 4. The food was good although there was limited English spoken and I feel that in an International Hotel and the fact that Ha Long Bay is well promoted there should be more English spoken by staff. We also felt that the showers in the hotel could have been cleaner.

Superb hotel in Ha Long BayPosted Mar 16, 2013 on Hotels.com
Very good hotel. For some reason it gets mixed reviews and I really don't get why. Firstly, it is worth explaining that only two nights are required in Halong to see everything, and I personally would spend a night at the Novotel well ahead of sleeping on a Junk for the night. Also if you're visiting Ha Long Bay (as I was) it is much easier staying in Ha Long, regardless of what the tour operators say. Hotel room was very large (think 4* UK size) with good bathroom and the bay-side rooms, especially the top floors (8+) have fantastic views. Wifi throughout and the restaurant has breakfast included and a buffet dinner for $18 (as well as single meal options for half that), and the food was very good, especially for Vietnam, but also in general. Staff spoke english and were very helpful. Highly recommended, cost ~£45/night. Be aware that the hotel is seen as the Hilton of the area, so the concierge does tend to suggest heavily priced suggestions (helicopter from Hanoi anyone?), so I'd advise planning independently for the extras. Pool was nice, but lacked chlorine and cleaning when i was there, but was out of season (mid March) so probably will be good in season
