Four friends joined myself and my husband for a reunion in Hamburg of old friends from Tehran who now live in the U.S. and Germany. We had a grand time at the Renaissance as the staff were friendly and helpful, the lobby area where we gathered was cozy and private and we were right in the center of town. We did not need to take the underground, though a station was close by, nor a bus, though a bus stop was a hop, skip and a jump from the hotel, nor a taxi, though a taxi stand was across the street, during our five-day stay. We walked to the Hamburg Museum, St. Michael's Church, the Rathaus, the beautiful lakes, and a dozen interesting restaurants in the vicinity - despite the fact that we are all over 65). The hotel is beautiful both inside and out, as it is located in a carefully renovated early 20th century brick building that is worth a look just for its beauty and charm. Not cheap, but its ambiance and location make it special. It is interesting to note that we were the only non-Germans that we saw in the hotel - and that its coffee shop and bar are meeting places for healthy and well-dressed Hamburgers - especially those in their 30s and 40s. Though none of us were in Hamburg to shop, the area is also full of beautifully designed "passages" made up of elegant shops.
