We had a wonderful time in Winchester and the Wessex was the perfect place for us to stay.

“Comfort and service in a great location”

Having read many reviews about this hotel, on this and similar websites, I made the booking with low expectations. I had heard that the decor was outdated, the rooms were 'hit-or-miss' with regards to cleanliness, and that the only redeeming feature was the location. Well, how glad I am that I took the gamble. We had such a lovely time, and would happily return to the Mercure the next time we are in Winchester. Although the hotel resembles a multi-storey car park from the outside, and is outdated to look at. It is most definitely clean, very comfortable, with attentive and helpful staff. What more could you want? The location is unbeatable, and I, rather suprisingly, got the 'cathedral view' that I requested on Expedia. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the room was very spacious. I had read criticisms of the number of channels available on the tv, but all I can say is that when in a city such as Winchester, I'd much rather go for a walk than sit inside watching tv. Additionally, we were staying in Winch (when I live in Basingstoke) for a friends birthday, and therefore wanted somewhere to stay after a night on the town. For this purpose, the Mercure was perfect, it is metres away from the hub of town, without being disturbed by it. Finally, the issue of car parking. Yes, the mercure does charge £7 for parking -but, if you look across the road, there is a public car park, where you can park for pittance for a whole weekend. We would certainly there again!

“Lovely quiet location”

We like the location of this hotel and have stayed here several times. The only thing against it is the lack of parking. We arrived on a Saturday lunchtime and saw that the Guildhall car park was pay and display for Saturday only so we paid until 6pm on Saturday and got a ticket until 8am on Monday so that was great. We loved looking out on the cathedral and I liked the colour scheme of the hotel room. We did not have supper there this time as there was a wedding party going on but have had it in the past. Service was attentive but much to slow for our liking. Breakfasts are reasonably good. I always go by the quality of the sausages and they were mediocre

“Great City Centre Hotel”

We had a large room looking out onto the Cathedral, room and bathroom was nice and warm. We requested more pillows and a replacement hair dryer which was done immediately. Very cosy lounges and breakfast room looking out onto Cathedral. Reception staff very friendly and helpful. Hotel right in the middle of the city and has its own car park for a reasonable £8.00 a day. A very relaxing and comfortable stay.

Very convenient location. A short walking distance to nearby shops and restaurants. Good counter service. Room is neat, but not spacious enough. The light of the room is too dim. Bed and pillows are just acceptable. Food at the hotel restaurant is nice. Overall satisfied.

“Good Hotel Great Location”

The hotel is in a great spot for exploring Winchester you can walk everywhere. Breakfast was excellent. On the down side I was dissapointed that the I could only get 5 channals on my room TV (bbc 1 & 2, ITV, Channal 4 & Sky news).

“Great hotel if attending a wedding at Winchester Cathedral.”

Booked 8 rooms for our adult family for a wedding at Winchester Cathedral. Hotel was perfectly located, staff & management extremely friendly and helpful. Had an assortment of Cathedral view and regular rooms. All were clean, but would suggest the larger Cathedral View if staying for a longer duration - they're larger and some have a good or "peak-a-boo" views of the Cathedral. Overall we were very satisfied.

“Good Central Winchester hotel with nice staff”

Very nice staff. Comfortable bed. Heating was not working but a spare heater was brought up within minutes. Overall it was a good place to stay. very central.
