Impeccable service and cleanliness
We had an excellent experience staying at Manakau Lodge. It is only a 15 min drive from Kaikoura. This is a very modern B&B and you can tell that the owner Neil has put a lot of thought and attention to every detail. Breakfast was delicious and worth the additional charge.

Great location near Kaikoura and a very well appointed property. The owner Neil is very helpful in organizing a picnic breakfast for early excursions. The bedroom and bathroom are high-end with very nice views of the sea. The mattress is extremely comfortable. If you plan to eat in, note there is no set up in the room. The community dining room seems off limits, however if you ask nicely you might be able to use it. Plates and silverware are on your own. Overall, it is a nice place to stay.

Disappointing - stay away from this place
Only thing good about this lodge is the mountain view from the rooms. The host was not at all welcoming right from the moment we walked in. He was definitely not happy when he saw we didn't book breakfast at this place. He asked us if we still want to book it, but I told him we are vegetarians and not sure if there would be any veg options in breakfast. He didn't like it and said oh you should go to town, you can find YOUR kind of food there. As this lodge is away from town centre you have to drive 15 mins if you need anything,Later he asked us where we are from, my wife asked if the hotel has a microwave where we can heat food if we like to, the guy said no we don't allow heating curries here as they are heavily scented. I was amazed with this response. Anyway, there are many other better options in the town centre you should go to rather than paying huge price here and not even being able to eat freely. Also, the milk in the fridge was expired. It's a shame for a 4-5 star hotel to not even have fresh milk for coffee

If I was “definitely not happy” about the fact you did not book your room on a breakfast-included basis, then why do you think it is that I choose to make a room-only rate available for you to book? It is precisely because we recognise that some of our guests may not wish to eat from our menu, may prefer something different, may not want to take breakfast at all, or may have to leave so early in the morning that they miss our service. Many guests change their minds on arrival, in which case we are perfectly happy to offer to serve breakfast and just charge the rate difference for it. If you do not wish to take it up, that is your choice and is absolutely fine by us. As it happens we have plenty of options for vegetarians on our breakfast menu, but you did not even bother to look at it, evidently preferring confrontation instead. We do not permit the consumption of any hot takeaway food in our guest rooms, and certainly not curry. We never have done and never will. But having assured me that "it was my hotel and my rules" and accepted the fact that our kitchen is not for guests' use, the following evening you then totally ignored that policy by bringing back two takeaway meals, the remains of which you left in the room waste bin for us to dispose of. Our milk is fresh. The container in the guest fridge was topped up from my kitchen, as from time to time we have a surplus of fresh milk to use up. You could have pointed out your concern to me or my staff and we would have reassured you or, if your were unhappy with that explanation, we would have offered you milk from my kitchen. But of course you said nothing. You will find when traveling in New Zealand and elsewhere that a little courtesy, good manners and respect shown to hotel and restaurant owners goes a long way. Contempt and hostility towards them does not. I certainly wish you had heeded your own advice and stayed somewhere else, cheaper.

Perfect stay in Kaikoura
My husband and I spent two nights here and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Neal is an excellent host. The property is beautiful with gorgeous views on all sides. Our room was very comfortable. Neal prepared a delicious breakfast for us. One morning we were up very early for whale watching and he prepared a breakfast for us to take along. We really appreciated that. The lodge is adorned with spectacular photos of New Zealand, taken by a very talented photographer (Neal).

wonderful place
Not only were all aspects of our room beyond our expectations, but we had our choice of breakfast items from a varied menu. Our Eggs Benedict were perfectly done. The setting for the lodge is off the main road with lovely views of the mountains in the rear. The ten minute drive from Kaikura was well worth the time.

Many thanks for staying with us and for your highly complimentary review. It was a pleasure meeting you. Just letting you know that we do provide a hair dryer in each room; it'll have been in one of the bedside table drawers. Sorry if you missed it!

Perfect spot for relaxing
Stunning lodge - perfect for a night of rest and relaxation. The room had lovely views across rural Kaikoura out to the ocean, with a deck to enjoy a wine at the end of the day. Our host Neil prepared delicious platters for Christmas supper and a perfect fruit salad and croissant platter for breakfast the following morning. Neil is an amazing photographer and the lodge showcases some stunning photographs of New Zealand.

Awesome experience
Great experience and service. I would definitely recommend this property. Friendly staff, comfortable rooms, great views, current technology, etc. Only a short 10-15 min drive from the whale watching checkin, the drive is well worth the view and quality accommodations.

Manakau Lodge - one of the best!
We stayed at Manakau lodge during our honeymoon in New Zealand and loved every bit of it. We actually decided to extend our stay at the time of checkin and fell in love with this place. Set amongst the hills and the ocean, the lodge provides a serene environment away from the hustle in a clean and comfortable environment. Its a must stay!!!

Terrific Lodge
Very peaceful location - about 1 mile off the main highway with an open view of the ocean to the west and mountains to the east. The rooms are spotless and the owner is very friendly and also an excellent cook. It is a 10 minute drive south to Kaikora where there are activities such as whale watching, restaurants and etc. If you are looking for a lovely place a bit off the beaten track with a great view of the Southern Cross this is the spot.

Nice but
Very nice setting and accommodation, but over priced for what was offered. No fridge or coffee/ tea service in room. No complementary wines or liquors in the room (as was offered at other luxury B&B/lodges where we stayed). Dining area lacked charm and needed some decorative appointments. Owner did not offer to carry in our bags checking in or out. (We are an older couple and the drive way was a hike to our car).

Extremely comfortable accommodation
Manakau Lodge was the roomiest and most comfortable of our accommodation whilst touring New Zealand. The service was very professional and the breakfast was excellent. It was a bit of a drive from the restaurants of Kaikoura but, if quietness is important then this is the place to go.

Beautiful B&B
The B&B is comfortable and beautiful. The bed and bathroom were very nice. The mountain view from the B&B is fantastic. The breakfast is freshly cooked by the owner who was also very friendly and provided me a few local travel tips. I really enjoy staying there. The only downside is that it's not easy to find the B&B if you don't have a Satnav. But overall, I will highly recommend the place.

Gorgeous lodge with stunning views
My partner and I stayed at Manakau lodge for 2 nights at the end of a 2 week holiday through New Zealand. When we arrived, Neil greeted us and helped to settle us in, before phoning to confirm our tour reservations for the next day and giving us dinner recommendations. During our stay he was always very friendly and helpful. We had a delicious cooked breakfast each morning and elected to have the three course dinner on our last night there which was possibly the besst meal we ate whilst in New Zealand! Absolutely sensational food - I would have thought we were in a 5 star restaurant! There are views from the lodge to the ocean on one side and snow capped mountains on the other. We would definitely stay there again.

Magnifique
A recommander ++++++++++++++
