A chartered town since 1238, Harwich is on the North Sea coast. Most of the older part of town is an architectural gem, full of mediaeval structures and public buildings built in the Gothic style. Of special interest include the early 19th-century High Lighthouse, the late 17th-century Treadwheel Crane, and the early 20th-century Electric Palace Cinema. The cinema's facade and projector are the originals.
