“Waikoloa is a great part of the island”

We have visited the Big Island 4 times, the last two staying at the Aston Shores. The units are spacious with large lanai's and we enjoy the climate better than in Kona-Kailua where humidity seems to grow with the day. It is close to excellent swimming and snorkeling and just a short drive if you want to do some other shopping along Ali'i Drive.

    Area recommendations
The Queen's Marketplace and King's Shops are not that expensive. If you want other shopping, Kona-Kailua is less than a half hour away.

    “Aston Waikaloa Shores,”

The Aston Waikaloa Shores is a real gem... much nicer than condos i have stayed at along Alii drive in Kona. It is clean, up-to-date, and everything is well maintained. It's a quiet location with beautiful lush landscaping amidst the lava fields. I especially liked the lanai and the convenient washer/dryer. For activities, one can walk to the Hilton Waikaloa and tour the grounds or go to the local Queen's marketplace to rent bikes or pick up groceries. Although Waikaloa is about a 20 min North of Kona ...well worth the extra mileage to get to tourist activities.

“I'd retire here if I could.”

On the 1st night we found the mattress to be as hard as a rock. The next day I complained and they installed a 4" mattress pad that I believe was similar to memory foam and that worked well. They need to invest in a better quality mattress. The carpet had large stains that should be addressed. And the bathroom fixtures need updating. No major problems other than what I would call updating. They need to update the TV to a flat screen versus the old 25" tube type and install a 2nd TV in the bedroom. Beyond these items, all else was great. Great pool and jacuzzi that we had to ourselves most of the 2 weeks there. First time using a condo type hotel and it was very convenient having a washer and dryer in the room. Great lanai. Very quiet surroundings. The housekeeping service was great. All in all, for the cost it is a great deal. Very safe security fences complex with 4 diamond hotels surrounding Aston Shores. Buzz's Surf & Sand Grill right outside the security fence is a fantastic 5 star restaurant. Hotel registration desk was very nice and helpful. They gave me 2 weeks of cable internet service for the cost of one week. We would stay here again.

    Area recommendations
We liked the Kona or dry side of the island best. Kona has all the amenities you would find in your hometown. It rained once for 10 minutes during the 2 weeks we were there (rained several times on the Hilo side.) The hotel is located in the Waikoloa area and the two strip malls within the resorts is extremely convenient to pick up groceries, gasoline and every other thing you might want or need.
    When to go
We like to avoid crowds so we like the mid-October to mid-November time of year to travel. This also turns out to be the least costly time to travel as well.
    Getting around
A very common well known travel book recommended renting a four wheel drive vehicle because of needing this option to get to many places. Weelllll, I did rent one and only really needed it at a couple of places we went. They cost almost double of what a standard vehicle rents for and I would not rent another. And we opened up a large warehouse store account on their recommendation to get cheaper gasoline. We found that the gasoline price was within a nickel per gallon almost everywhere on the island as that warehouse store sold it and it was most inconvenient to have to drive to Kona everytime we needed gasoline, so we just bought it at the regular gas stations. The only "expensive" gasoline station we found was the one at our resort and that is just because of the convenience of having gas available within 2 minutes of your hotel room. Gasoline prices all over the island were running in the mid 3 dollar range which is what we pay in Seattle. And buy Expedia's car insurance and ignore the rental car company's car insurance. The basic insurance offered from the rental car was 4 times more expensive than Expedia's.
    Outdoors or beach
Hawaii has great beaches on all of the islands but Hapuna State Park beach is one of the finest beaches I've been on anywhere. It has a small reef on each end if you want to safely snorkel and see the sealife. And the large span of golden powder sand beach in the middle had plenty of room between groups of people and two lifeguard stations situated at either end. It has a private vender renting anything you would need at a beach from chairs to umbrellas to snorkeling equipment to boogey boards. And they sell hot dogs/hamburgers as well. Between the parking lot and the beach there are large roofed picnic areas with barbecues and tables with bench seats and at the beach they have two fresh water outdoor showers to wash the sand off before getting back in your car to leave. Didn't particularly like those little man-of-war jelly fishes that turned up one day and stung several people. Not life threatening but gave a pretty good chemical burn that supposedly lasts a day or so. But no sharks . . . that's a plus.

    “Great condo!”

Great condo in a good location among several resorts. The one bedroom unit was perfect for my wife and I. The king sized bed was comfy and clean. The living room had a TV, DVD player, and a CD player. Very roomy, and the decor was quite up to date and pleasant. The full kitchen was great for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The laundry room is off the kitchen and has an apartment sized washer And dryer. Every thing worked very well. We would definitely come back again!!
