“"Amazing Hotel! This is and will remain are favorite Big Island Destination."”
Sept.29/Oct.9 2011. From the time we pulled up till the time we drove away we were made to feel like old friends. I have never been treated so well by hotel staff. Cleaning staff came by the room atleast 4 times a day keeping the ice bowl full and making sure we hadf everything we needed. Fresh towels, soap, and lotions were always available. We stayed in the plumeria beach club room on the 3rd floor which has an amazing view of the beach. They gave us a free room upgrade when we arrived. The beach at Mauna Kea is second to none. Water was perfect. One thing of note is the weather at Mauna Kea seems to always be better than in Kona. If your looking for a party scene hotel then this is not the hotel for you. If your looking for a perfect beach great weather and a quiet relaxing time with other wonderful people then you will find no better. My wife and I are 34-39 which is younger than average at Mauna Kea. Prices at hotel are not the cheapest on the island. The breakfast buffet is outstanding! Friday night Clam Bake at the Hao Tree on the beach is a seafood lovers heaven. Can't wait to go back.
“Beautiful location”
A classy and picturesque resort. The crescent beach here is fantastic: beautiful, secluded, and clean. There are coral reefs at either end that are great for casual snorkeling, while the majority of the beach is an unbroken stretch of soft, clean sand. Our room was recently renovated, but in the bathroom some of the renovations were already showing wear. Service is generally, but not universally, friendly. Food prices at the resort are very high, but this is to be expected in Hawai'i at a beautiful resort.
“Loved it!!”
Hadn't been back in 25 years so not sure what to expect, but pleasantly surprised, did not disappoint. The minute you pull up you can tell it is beautifully understated and relaxed. Went to visit all the other neighboring resorts only to keep repeating, "It's not the Mauna Kea". Couple of caveats, the Mountain Room was lovely, overlooking the entrance, not the parking lot (yes!). However, the heavy duty lawn/blower equipment would start at 4:30 am, so next time might try to splurge for an ocean view. Maid service was great, although one day they forgot to clean the room, so we had to call (just a hiccup). Dining options were disappointing. Monettes (the former Batik) was inviting but the food was not up to par for the prices. The menu was not up to date, didn't reflect the available selections or how the items were actually being prepared. Seemed like they were experimenting (on us), and at premium prices. Manta's has a primo view but we felt like we were imposing on the staff. We arrived at a 8:15, made a reservation for 8:30, the last seating. We came back at 8:34 at which point they had to check with the chef if we could still be served. It seemed that they just wanted to get out of there! Food not so impressive. Great casual meals at the Hau Tree down on the beach. Plenty of other dining choices in the area (Merriman's in Waimea a big hit), but it's too bad the in house choices are lacking. Overall, hotel staff was great, always gracious and helpful, 10 out of 10!
“best location on big island”
Tha Mauna Kea has the best location on the island. the service and restaurants were excellent. I highly recommend it.
“Mildly Disappointed”
The best way to summarize our thoughts about the Mauna Kea is to say that we thought it was aspiring to be as good as the Four Seasons or Ritz type hotels (and charging equivalent prices) but really fell short. The service was mediocre at best in multiple areas of the hotel: - The beach service was terrible. people reserve the few cabanas available at like 6 am by leaving towels and books, then don't show up for 5 hours to claim them. the beach staff did a shoddy job of policing this. one day there weren't enough towels to go around, and sometimes it was hard to get someone to set up a chair and umbrella. - We ate at Manta restaurant for our last night and thought the service was terrible (waited 10 min to get anyone to come take a drink order), and a band of wild cats prowled all around our table during the entire meal. - The spa is tiny with few amenities and the service there was poor as well. The receptionist was unaccommodating, and my massage was among the worst I've had (and also among the most expensive). On the up side: the rooms are really very comfy and beautifully furnished, the snorkeling just off the beach was fantastic, and the grounds are lovely and well kept. All in all, the Mauna Kea really has a long way to go to compete with other hotels in the same price range. We would not return to this hotel having stayed at other 4-5 star places in Hawaii for equal price or less that had infinitely better service.
“Highly Recommended”
We've stayed at the Mauna Kea numerous times- it has always been one of our favorite hotels. This is the first time since the renovation- they have really upped their game. They have managed to maintain the laid back vibe the hotel has always had while significantly updating/improving the rooms and the restaurants. The staff was fantastic- across the board. If you are looking for a cookie cutter mega-resort, this place is probably not for you. If you want a low key, classy hotel on a great strip of beach - you will probably like the Mauna Kea. Can't wait to go back again.
“Serenity”
From time we drove up to the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, we could feel the serenity. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating, and the hotel's location on a small bay made us feel that we were part of a small and very special world.
“A very special place”
I really loved this hotel. The architecture of the hotel was very unusual but worked perfectly in this idyllic setting. The sixties feel of the decor was just right, and was not overdone. The rooms were a little small but very artfully furnished. The staff were friendly and professional, and the room service top notch. I would love to go back if it weren't such a long way away.

“Plan to make this stop again.”
We had a wonderful time and found everyone there very helpful and friendly. Christie and Cynthia from room service were the best! We enjoyed having our breakfast out on the balcony of our room several mornings, while we enjoyed the perfect weather and beautiful view. The food and service at all of the restaurants were excellent. The service at the beach cabana was also excellent. Jayne at the concierge desk was very helpful helping us arrange a rental car for our last day on the island. The restaurants and lounges close early, but we are not really night owls. The laid back atmosphere was very restful. We both hated to leave!
