“Volcano House”
Great and historic place to dtay right on the rim of the volcano. WHile it's not the Four Seasons, the rooms were clean and comfortable and staff was attentive.
“The only place I would stay”
We had a crater view room and it was awesome! We thoroughly enjoyed staying within Volcanoes National Park and so close to the volcano. We were also within 5 minutes of the town of Volcano, so that was convenient. It is only 30 easy minutes from Hilo airport. We loved this quaint, yet impressive hotel. We love staying within national parks whenever we can, and we were not disappointed.
“Old, tired, and sad”
Volcano House has an incomparable view, and not much else. And most rooms don't even have the view. The decor is a unattractive mush of postwar cheap, seventies cheap, and eighties cheap. You get bad paneling, peeling wallpaper, fading volcano-themed 'art' and an ill-conceived eighties attempt to add a few Victorian touches to a modern building. In the last twenty years, it looks like nothing major has been done. I have a great affection for National Park Lodges, but this is the worst I've ever stayed in. Someone with money and design talent needs to give this place a complete redo, or just tear it down and start over. Our room was spacious, but so sparsely furnished it looked empty. One small uncomfortable lounge chair and a neat wooden rocking chair were the only places to sit, Otherwise, there were small nightstands, broken shutters, and lots of empty floor. Also a nice, big closet, a built in desk area that was all right, if dated, and a very small bathroom with just a shower. We also had the misfortune of unlucky winds that were blowing the 'vog' from Kilauea right at the hotel. This is a nasty sulfurous smog that is irritating to breathe if you're healthy, and possibly worse if you're not. It doesn't usually do this, but it can, so be warned. And don't bother with the restaurant, except maybe the average breakfast buffet. Much better food can be had in Volcano Village.
