"Great resort with awesome grounds "
This place is great. Clean, well-maintained, and relaxing. Not crowded at all. Hot tubs are nice and hot with good jets. The saltwater pond that circulates around the resort is really neat. They have all sorts of cool fish in there and even sea turtles. Check out a bike (free of charge) and bike around the fish ponds. You can also bike to the grocery store just down the road which is great for lunch and to get supplies. Also, make sure to watch the ocean for sea turtles an hour or two before the sun sets!

"Great location. A little out dated."
We really loved the location of this hotel. We walked all around Kona town from here. We stayed in an ocean front room where we could watch the dolphins every morning. The hotel bar has great ambience (open-air, great drinks, live music). The hotel room and most of the hotel in general needs to be refreshed. You can tell it used to be a grand hotel a decade or two ago! Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Royal Kona and felt the price we paid was fair (it easily could've been doubled with a renovation).

"Nice quiet restful place."
The location was well lit from the road to make it easy to find at night with a big enough sign to find the drive the first time by. The breakfast was well worth the money. Enjoyed the view and it was so peaceful. The cooler, eating utensils and wine glasses added to the place. We were able to pack a lunch and wander to the beach and pick up supplies to have dinner in if we wanted.

"Beautiful views. No beach access. No air condition"
Beautiful views. No beach access. No air conditioning so each room could go far with the addition of ceiling fans. And the TV needs a lot of work with connection issues. You can't watch anything without it being interrupted with lost signal. Sometimes every few seconds. But was a very relaxing week. The staff was trying to be as helpful as they could with what they have control over. Connection issues not being one of them. But they tried.

    Where to stay in Hawaii

    Big Island Hotel Guide

Richardson’s Ocean Park - Head the black-sand beaches of Richardson’s Ocean Park. This spot in the Hilo region boasts rock pools and surf spots. Kids can play in the pools, which are protected by a natural seawall, while experienced surfers can shred up the break. Don’t miss a tour of the Richardson family home, which was built along the shore in the 1920s.

Akaka Falls - The Akaka Falls State Park features two of Hawaii’s most noteworthy waterfalls: Kahuna Falls and Akaka Falls. Kahuna Falls is 100-feet tall, while Akaka Falls is an impressive 442 feet. Visitors can walk along the half-mile paved trail to arrive at these majestic waterfalls in the middle of the rain forest.
