Loved this hotel!Posted Sep 5, 2013 on Hotels.com
This is possibly the coolest hotel I have ever stayed in. Being a former prison, when you are in the hallways, you could think you might still be in a prison. However, the conversion to a hotel is suburb as the rooms are large and extremely comfortable. There's a tram stop just out the front of the hotel, however you don't really need to catch the tram as it's only a 10 minute walk to the heart of the city and Katajanokka is a lovely suburb to walk through. The reception staff were great, they recommended a wonderful restaurant for us to eat at one night to celebrate my birthday. They also went the extra mile and wrote me a card which they left in the room for me. Very impressed! I highly recommend this hotel to anyone who is visiting Helsinki.

It was a delightful experience. The hotel exceeded our expectations. We especially liked coming back in the evening after a long day of exploring the city and relaxing and having a drink at the bar on the terrace in the yard. We look forward to returning to Helsinki soon and will definitely book our accommodations at the Katajanokka again. Thanks for a great visit.

Jail hotel has limitationsPosted Aug 16, 2013
Pros: Compared to the rest of Helsinki prices, it wasn't too expensive.
Cons: Small room, stuffy, no amenities in the area.
Location: Nothing to do in the area- waterfront inaccessible in that region; no bars or restaurants close by.
Interesting hotel, reasonably priced in a very expensive city. The room was small, like a jail cell, but adequately appointed. Air flow was inadequate and the a/c couldn't be adjusted, so we tried to open the windows, with difficulty. A special wrench was obtained from reception, and by standing on the furniture, we were able to get some fresh air. Given the size of the room, a sliding door separated the bed area from the bathroom; I didn't appreciate toilet activity noises so close to where I was trying to sleep! There were no restaurant or bar services in the neighborhood. There is no WIFI in the rooms, given the thick concrete walls.

Nice place to stayPosted Aug 10, 2013 on Hotels.com
We stayed for a couple of nights and overall it was a good experience. The location is fine. Just a few tram stops from the city and the tram stop right at the door. Tram 4 (not 4T) and you know the place by the high red brick walls on the left. Breakfast great. Interesting place being an old jail. Nice var on terrace with good live and recorded music. Closes a bit early due to neighbour considerations. One problem though. We were there in mid summer and the room ventilation is very poor in our room. Room 224. The windows require a special handle to open so on the first night we had to prop open the door to the hall with a book just to be ably to sleep. It was very very stuffy. Security closed the door at one point and I had to talk with them. Next day I asked and was given the special handle for the window. You need to be tall and stand on a chair to open them. After this the room was great with some air. This did let the place down I thought. Stay but get the ventilation sorted when you arrive. We would stay again.

Excellent HotelPosted Jul 23, 2013
Pros: Fantastic patio to have a drink and some food. Restaurant was very good as was morning breakfast.
Location: Five mins on the 4 or 4T tram and you are in downtown Helsinki
Great hotel converted from a 19th century jail. While the rooms are small by North American standards they were very comfortable. Staff was excellent as was the restaurant.
