Favorable swimming conditions, great natural sights and plenty of fun activities make this beach a firm favorite among visitors to Provincetown.

With warm waters, pleasant scenery and a wealth of amenities, Herring Cove Beach appeals to a wide demographic. Spend a few hours swimming or sunbathing on its shores and stay into the evening to witness its legendary sunset.

This beach is divided into two areas. On the right side of the beach when facing the water, families tend to claim a spot for the day to enjoy the sand and sea. Spend quality time playing in the surf or making sandcastles with the kids. The area to the left is typically frequented by the gay community and is clothing optional. It is just one of the many LGBT-friendly areas in Provincetown.

Arrive early to get a good spot on the beach as it can get very crowded during summer. Go for a swim while you are here. The waters are warmer and less volatile than other locations on Cape Cod, which makes this beach particularly suitable for swimmers. Seal and whale sightings have been reported here. Watch for these majestic creatures frolicking on the horizon. Use the bike trail that runs next to the beach and farther along the coast.

Stay at the beach until sunset and get a photograph to rival any postcard. The sun descends directly over the ocean here, creating a glowing image you will want to be reminded of frequently. Pack food and drinks and enjoy a picnic with romantic views. It’s easy to spend a full day here using the many convenient amenities nearby. The area has shower and bathroom facilities as well as shops where you can buy food.

Ride the seasonal Shuttle line to reach Herring Cove Beach in summer or bike or drive here during the off-season. If you plan to go by car, it is less than 10 minutes away from the center of Provincetown. Pay a fee to use the parking lot.
