Great hotel, but slow service in restaurantPosted Sep 1, 2014 on Hotels.com
I know this hotel from the past and still think it's great but the service in its restaurant was slow and unhelpful. I brought an American friend with me and he too liked the hotel very much but commented on the restaurant service. We ate there two nights in a row. On the first night they did not have the salmon starter on the menu, and I had to return the duck because it was too tough; on the second night we had to wait 30 mins for our starter to arrive and the other courses were also slow in coming. Breakfast was great, and waking up to the beautiful setting is fantastic. Good bar staff who make superb whisky sours!

St Albans revisitedPosted Jun 27, 2014
The location was the main reason for choosing this hotel as the Abbey is in easy walking distance with the main shopping area just a little further on. The hotel is clean with friendly staff, the rooms spacious and clean.I would however expect the rooms to contain a fridge, safe, which the Beeches (my room) did not have. The air conditioning was noisy and not very effective The evening meal was very good all three courses tasty and well presented The full English breakfast was very disappointing with crispy eggs and chewy bacon and old coffee. The location and friendly staff are the plus points

We only booked one night on our way home from a wedding to take a look at St. Albans. The hotel was very welcoming, the staff extremely helpful and the grounds at the rear so beautiful and relaxing. Our breakfast was comprehensive and cooked to order to our specific requirements. The hotel was really well located for getting a flavour of St Albans on foot. We did a circular walk to the superb Verulamium museum, then along the river through the park to the beautiful and unique cathedral and town centre.
