On the southern bank of the Seines estuary, the port-city of Honfleur surrounds a picturesque 17th century harbor. Saint Catherines Church, constructed by shipbuilders in the 15th century, is composed entirely of wood, and the ceiling resembles the hulls of upside-down ships. Impressionist artists such as Claude Monet and Gustave Courbet once painted murals on the towns slate-fronted houses.
