“Old style, but right near everything”
Last of the inexpensive and quaint hotels. Right near the beach and Ft. DeRussy, most rooms have a kitchenette, the rooms are clean, and the gardens superb. If you want to pay a lot more for a nicer bathroom feel free to do so, but if your stay in Waikiki is about the beach and wandering around, hard to do better.
“great time”
The room was nice. They also have to pools which were nice. But the charge alot for the parking so be prepared. It is also in good location for all of the shops are close by.
“Nice older style hotel”
A nice 2 to 3 story older hotel very close to the beaches and Ft. DeRussy, etc. The rooms can vary in quality depending on your preferences. If your goal is resort type stuff, you won't be happy, but if you want a nice place as a hub central to Waikiki and the beaches, really hard to beat. The rooms are nothing special, but they have kitchens and everything is clean. Enjoy it now before they tear it down and build another 20 story Trump Tower on the site.
“Convenient Family Hotel”
The Gateway is convenient, moderately priced, with good service. The kitchenette is key for those with a family, and the complimentary continental breakfast is a big plus. There is a lobby level convenience store that has whatever you need, from souvenirs to soda. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful throughout our stay. An overall thumbs up.
“Quaint”
It was built in the 1950's, clean, and easy access to the beach. We will go back.
“Old fashion Hawaii”
If you want to go back to what Hawaii was in yesteryear try the Hawaiiana. It's small 3 stories, open courtyard with lush vegetation. The pools were kept neat and clean and the staff was very friendly. The rooms were spacious with kitchenettes including a fresh pineapple upon arrival. We enjoyed our stay.
“Very quiet but the rooms need updating”
The staff is very nice. My room really needed an update though. Granted, it was very reasonably priced and I LOVED that there is a "quiet" rule between 9 PM and 8 AM. In this day and age however, there needs to be some internet access. Paint was chipping in the bathroom. The bathroom was functional but not much else. I see it more for people who wonb't be spending time in the room much and who need close access to the beach. Enough said.
“probably wouldn't go back”
Was here 10 years ago. I was spoiled then as had poolside room. This time we were stuck way in the back, with view of another building from our balcony, with security lights shining in our room. Looked like daylight all night. Room was clean but the whole complex smelled medicinal from the cleansers they use. It is a quiet complex, and if all you're going to do is sleep there, then it's worth the price.
“Shabby but very cozy and convenient”
This hotel is an oasis amongst high rise hotels. Unfortunately first impressions of our room were not good. The furnishings were very shabby but with a good handyman etc, it could be improved. The main draw of this hotel is that it is pretty quiet (mostly oldies go there) and the grounds are very tranquil compared to hussle/hustle going on outside in those huge hotels. It's very close to the beach, transport, shops, and easy walking distance for all. I liked it very much in the end. Two pools, too!
“Worst hotel stay ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Were should I begin..the room was something out of a bad dream. Carpet was stained, picture on wall was faded from the sun, shower was stained with brown marks, burns on wall next to stove, view from patio was a toliet and garbage from room below us,room door had louvers on it that were broke and did'nt open, and the worse was our room was on the side of a busy street and had traffic early in the morning ..4:00 a.m. and late at night. No sleeping in for us that week. The maid only fixed the bed, emptied the trash, gave clean towels daily ...she never cleaned our bathroom sink or shower that would explain the stains. The only positive thing was the front desk staff were nice and the grounds were beautiful and tropical ..very deceiving. I would'nt recommend this place at all.
