We paid less than our friends in the hotel next door and had better accommodation. A good quality hotel close to the city. The pool was a perculiar shade of green (it was very hot)but everything else was well looked after.

“Good value hotel”

This hotel has a convenient location and a good size car park. The beds were very comfortable and the staff in reception helpful. On the rate chosen, breakfast was extra but good value. It was nice to have a pool available but it was rather cold. It is on the main road and was noisy, until I discovered that the window was open. Quite acceptable when it was closed.

“Comfortable and convenient”

I stayed at the Marque during a conference at the ANU. It was only five minutes' drive away and extremely handy. The restaurant food was superb and the wait staff excellent. The room was spacious and comfortable and my Continental breakfast was enormous. My only issues were with the bathroom - the shower was over the bath (no problem there) but the bath itself was filthy, with a deep layer of soap scum around the bottom that could be scratched off with a fingernail. The other problem was the hot/cold and water pressure was inconsistent, so I alternatively cooked or froze during my shower. The room was quiet, the bed comfortable and I would stay there again.

“Old but lacking TLC.”

The hotel is old, but basic maintenance is lacking. Most room doors have chips out of the paintwork, some carpets are in poor shape, bathroom fixtures in poor condition. Also TVs are very old and reception is poor. Overall, badly in need of refurbishment to got rid of old drab feeling that it elicits. Location was good, far enough away from main city blocks for some quiet, but easy walk to centre of town. Room was large enough and comfortable. Bed and linen were good.

“Worst room in the hotel”

I received an excellent rate at this hotel through Expedia by paying for the entire stay in advance. The hotel is also located on one of the main thoroughfares of Canberra, so I was looking forward to my stay. The Marque Hotel essentially booked me in the worst room in the building, which I slowly realized as each day wore on. First, the location is right next to the outdoor smoker's area. Second, the handle to the shower door was broken and the bathroom fixtures were so old that at a certain speed, grey water came out of the taps. Third, the door to the room is adjacent to the busiest and noisiest part of the hotel. Fourth, I once tried the breakfast, which is ridiculously expensive for the poor quality of food they serve. I was there for 3 days and out and about most of the time. When I returned to my room late at night, I kept thinking "I'll change my room or complain tomorrow morning." Well, time went by quickly, and it's my fault that I just bit the bullet and muddled through. The management really needs to get serious about updating their rooms from the inside (and not just the outside of the building), and to stop taking advantage of first-time visitors like mine. The best part of the stay was dealing with the staff at the front desk--who were both extremely polite and helpful--and of course, knowing the attitude of the management, are probably paid next to nothing!

The Marques is surprisingly run down and poorly maintained, though the staff was pleasant.
