Dearborn
This suburb of Detroit is home to Michigan’s leading tourist attraction, The Henry Ford, a large indoor-outdoor American history museum and entertainment complex named after the famous car manufacturer and inventor of the same name. One-third of Dearborn residents are Arab-Americans. The Islamic Center of America is here, as is the largest mosque in North America–the Dearborn Mosque.
Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW)
Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), in nearby Rotulus, Mich., is the country’s ninth-busiest airport. It has access to more than 130 destinations in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. It will be the first American airport to feature regular service by the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner when it starts service in late 2009.
Downtown Detroit
Detroit’s metro area is home to nearly six million people. Downtown Detroit has undergone extensive urban renewal in the last 15 years. The 982-acre Belle Isle Park is a popular destination. Sports are big in the Motor City. The Detroit Tigers play baseball at Comerica Park, the Detroit Lions (football) are at Ford Field, and the Detroit Red Wings (hockey) are at Joe Louis Arena.
Madison Heights
Madison Heights is part of Oakland County’s Automation Alley. It is home to more than 1,000 commercial and industrial businesses and services, in addition to having more than 100 companies with offices in town.
Novi - Livonia
Novi, a suburb of nearly 50,000 people 25 miles west of Detroit, is one of Michigan’s fastest growing cities. It is home to Twelve Oaks Mall and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. Another large Detroit suburb, with more than 100,000 residents, is Livonia, 22 miles northwest of the Motor City.
Southfield
Another Detroit suburb, Southfield is home to nearly 80,000 people. The Southfield Town Center, an office complex with a Westin hotel and a conference center; and the American Center, a high-rise office tower, are found here.
Troy - Auburn Hills
Troy is a business and shopping destination in suburban Detroit. It is home to the exclusive Somerset Collection shopping center. Auburn Hills is home to the NBA’s Detroit Pistons and the WNBA’s Detroit Shock. Both teams play at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
Warren - Sterling Heights
Warren, with a population of 139,000, is Detroit’s largest suburb and Michigan’s third-largest city. It is home to a number of commercial and government-owned businesses. Sterling Heights, population 128,000, is Detroit’s second-largest suburb and Michigan’s fourth-largest city.
Windsor, Ontario, Canada
Windsor, population 219,000, is the only point on the U.S.-Canadian border where travelers head south into Canada. Nicknamed the “Rose City,” Windsor is home to the Odette Sculpture Park on the banks of the Detroit River. Twenty-eight sculptures by world-renowned artists can be seen here.
