Arue
This north-facing residential and resort commune, or district, to the east of Pape’ete is most well known for having within its territories the atoll of Tetiaroa. It is located 59 km north of Pape’ete and is where the infamous mutiny on the Bounty occurred in 1789. A luxury resort is currently being built on the atoll. Arue itself features black sand beaches with gentle waves lapping the curving shoreline.

Faaa
Faa’a Airport, just five km southwest of Pape’ete, is the international gateway to the region and the first stop for most visitors. Faa’a’s small airport – the only one in French Polynesia – is built on reclaimed land jutting out into the South Pacific and surrounded by coral reef. The south end of Faa’a boasts one of the only naturally-white sand beaches on the entire island.

Papeete
Pape’ete is the largest city in French Polynesia. The bustling Pape’ete Central Market and the nearby Tahiti Pearl Market each warrant a morning visit; your afternoon can be spent riding the ferry to Moorea for a few hours of snorkeling in the azure waters of Cook’s Bay, and you can while away the evening dancing until dawn at one of Pape’ete’s many nightclubs.

Punaauia
Puna’auia is less than 10 km south of Faa’a Airport, and its restaurant scene is known throughout the islands. Many of Tahiti’s most luxurious homes are found here, often perched on hillsides high above the sea for optimal views. In town, you can visit the Museum of Tahiti and Her Islands, or you can take an excursion to Mount Marau and nearby Punaruu Valley.
