Barra de Navidad
Barra de Navidad is a small beach town less than an hour north of Manzanillo. The old section of town, paved with bricks and cobblestone, is situated on a sandbar about 4 blocks wide. The Pacific Ocean breaks against a long sandy beach to the west, and a calm lagoon lies to the east. The old-town area is home to numerous small shops, hotels, and beachfront restaurants.

During the colonial era, Manzanillo Bay was the launching point for various expeditions; Cortez sought refuge here to protect his galleons from Portuguese pirates. Today, the city is the busiest port in Mexico and a thriving beach-resort destination. With big-purse fishing tournaments held in November and February, the city is also known as the “Sailfish Capital of the World.”
