Cheney
Granite Herculean pillars erected in 1915 frame the entrance to Eastern Washington University, Cheney’s academic and cultural center. Five miles south, the dramatic Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 16,000 acres of marshes, wetlands, and lakes, offering prime wildlife habitat. At sunset, patient observers glimpse bull elk, white-tail deer, moose, and more than 200 bird species.

Downtown Spokane
Downtown’s visitors find a bustling business and shopping core, half of which is designated a National Historic District. Nearby, the Spokane River flows through the 100-acre Riverfront Park and Spokane Center, legacies of the 1974 World’s Fair. This vibrant hub includes performing arts and convention venues. Across the river sits Gonzaga University, known for its famous graduate, Bing Crosby.

Liberty Lake
The small community of Liberty Lake is big on recreation. Golf courses, along with the lake and adjacent 2,983-acre Liberty Lake Park, offer a variety of diversions. 25 miles of connected trails, including one over Interstate 90, have earned this city a Bicycle Friendly Community designation. A bike festival is held at the city’s Pavillion Park, which also hosts a summer concert-and-movie series.

North Spokane
Bisected by Division Street, this area north of the Spokane River combines residential neighborhoods and retail districts. In the center, the two-story NorthTown Mall features department stores, restaurants, specialty shops, and a multiplex cinema. To the north, Whitworth University’s scenic 200-acre campus, with red brick buildings nestled among the pines, enrolls nearly 2,500 students.

Spokane International Airport (GEG)
Travelers depart The Lilac City for Canada, California, and Chicago from the Spokane International Airport. A vital transportation hub and economic engine, Washington State’s second largest airport has a business park. The airport shares air space with Fairchild Air Force Base, known for its parachute training. Nearby, the 37-mile Centennial Trail winds amid tall pines along the Spokane River.

Spokane Valley
East of Spokane, this city of more than 80,000 was born from a handful of existing farming towns. Avista Stadium is here, home of the Spokane Indians minor league baseball team. For recreation, visitors trek the Centennial Trail along the Spokane River, popular with kayakers. Both river and trail can be accessed from Mirabeau Point Park, whose boundary also contains CenterPlace Event Center.
