Coral Coast
Easily traversed via the Queen’s Highway, the 20 km Coral Coast is dotted with villages, sugar cane fields, and apartments, cottages, cabins, and hotels – from budget through to 5-star. The picture-postcard coastline is also home to endless stretches of beach and one of the island’s most striking reefs. Most tastes are catered for, and activities include snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking, golf, tennis, horse riding, fishing, biking, and hiking.
Lomaiviti Islands
The Lomaiviti archipelago comprises seven main islands and a number of smaller land masses across 411 square km. Levuka, the old capital of Fiji, is located on Ovalau, the largest island in the group at 13 km by 10 km. Much of the topography is relatively rugged and volcanic, with secluded resorts to suit 3- to 5-star budgets. The region offers excellent scuba diving and snorkelling.
Mamanuca Islands
A group of small islands offshore from Nadi, the Mamanucas are ringed by sandy beaches, turquoise to pastel green waters, and coral reefs. Access is a quick hop from Nadi via boat or plane transfer, and accommodation options range from budget to luxury, and bures (traditional thatch-roof huts) through to exclusive beachfront villas. Scuba diving and snorkelling in this region comes highly recommended.
Nadi
The third largest township in Fiji, Nadi is 9 km from the international airport, and a centre of commerce and tourism. Ferries to many island resorts depart from here, and sugar cane plantations hug the surrounding area. A multi-cultural town, Nadi features a busy marketplace of stalls and homemade souvenirs. It is also the gateway to the Sleeping Giant Gardens’ extraordinary orchid collection.
Pacific Harbour
Some 140 km south of Nadi, Pacific Harbour is a self-contained tourism destination for adventure seekers and sports enthusiasts. Here visitors discover varied and world-renowned dive sites, featuring shark feeding through to wrecks. The adventure capital of Fiji also offers an 18-hole championship golf course, and some of the best fishing, kayaking, and white-water rafting in the South Pacific.
Southern Islands
The Southern Islands are a mecca for divers and surfers. Isolated resorts dot the archipelago, along with villages, farms, and quiet beaches. Part of the group is Beqa Island, home of the legendary firewalkers. Surrounded by 305 km of coral, Beqa is considered the soft coral capital of the world, with mild currents, underwater visibility averaging 30.5 metres, and water temperatures of approximately 26.5 ˚C.
Suva
Multi-cultural Suva has preserved a colonial heritage dating back to the late 1800s. The Fijian capital, and hub of business and politics, offers restaurants, nightclubs, markets, museums, and cinemas. Set on a peninsula, the city features 78 parks including Thurston Gardens’ extensive collection of Fijian artefacts and South Pacific flora, and Apted Park, popular for sunrise and sunset viewing.
Vanua Levu
The second largest of the Fijian islands is significantly less populated than Viti Levu and home to many small remote resorts. It is a mountainous island as well.
Yasawa Islands
Less developed than the nearby Mamanucas, the 16 Yasawa islands and smaller islets are noted for their lush hilltops, classic palm-fringed white-sand beaches, and brilliant coral reefs. Volcanic in origin, the islands are a paradise for cruisers, yachties, honeymooners, divers, and backpackers, with resorts to match, from budget through to exclusive 5-star retreats.
