Bourgoin-Jallieu
About 30 kilometres from Lyon in southeastern France, the bedroom community of Bourgoin-Jallieu is famous for its rugby team, CS Bourgoin-Jallieu. It is one of the top performing teams in France’s Top 14 rugby union.

Chamrousse
A ski resort in southeastern France, Chamrousse boasts downhill and cross-country ski trails for everyone from beginners to champions. The climb of Chamrousse was used as a mountain time-trial in the 2001 Tour de France.

Grenoble
The largest city in southern France with 160,000 people, Grenoble is surrounded by the Alps. Though small, the Musée de Grenoble has some impressive works, including four Picassos, one Miro, one Kandinsky, and one Andy Warhol. The Musée de la Resistance et de la deportation de l'Isere is worth a visit for its informative exhibition about World War II.

l'Alpe-d'Huez
A ski resort in the central French Alps, Alpe d’Huez is mostly known for being one of the main mountains for cyclists to climb in the yearly Tour de France. It has been a stage finish nearly every year since 1976 and draws thousands of tourists to the race each summer.

Les Deux-Alpes
About 70 kilometres south of Grenoble is Les Deux-Alpes – the largest skiable glacier in Europe and France’s second-oldest ski resort. The glacier allows for year-round skiing, though ski lifts are only open at certain times of the year. Les Deux-Alpes is also home to Ecole du ski Français, the country’s largest ski school.

Vercors
Vercors, in France’s Pre-Alps region, is a popular location for downhill and cross-country skiing.

Vienne
About 30 kilometres south of Lyon, Vienne was first home to the Allobroges, a Celtic tribe in Gaul. In 47 BC, it was transformed into a Roman colony under Julius Caesar, and was a thriving urban centre. Today, the town is a regional commercial and industrial centre specialising in the food industry. Vienne hosts an annual jazz festival every July, attracting European and international tourists.
