Angel Fire
Angel Fire bills itself as “A Place for All Seasons.” Tourism is the lifeblood of this mountain town, popular with skiers and snowboarders. Nearby, Monte Verde Lake offers fishing and two walking trails. Angel Fire is also the home of a solemn landmark, the Vietnam Veterans National Memorial. With a white chapel blending into the peaks of the nearby mountains, the Memorial also hosts exhibitions.

Arroyo Seco
This small village affords panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Carson National Forest. Arroyo Seco borders the Taos Indian Reservation, parts of which are off-limits to non-tribal members. The historic Taos Pueblo is directly south of town. Arroyo Seco hosts an annual wildlife film festival.

Eagle Nest
The Wild West is alive and restored in Eagle Nest. The town’s buildings reflect its gold-rush roots, circa 1860s. One of Eagle Nest’s most popular attractions is east of town. There, rainbow trout and salmon swim in Eagle Nest Lake State Park. Deer, elk, and bear wander by the shore. And, as the name implies, bald and golden eagles nest in the area. Cimarron Canyon’s granite cliffs tower nearby.

Red River
Red River developed a reputation as a mountain playground at the turn of the 20th Century. Like many of its Taos-area neighbors, Red River features winter skiing and summer hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Having grown beyond its skiing roots, Red River is also popular for events like Mardi Gras, Oktoberfest, and competitive cook-offs.

Sipapu
Sipapu is a ski resort that caters to families. The Rio Pueblo flows by Sipapu, making it a popular fishing spot. In the warmer months, the area is popular with disc golfers, a concept similar to golf but played with Frisbees. The adjacent Carson National Forest beckons both hikers and mountain bikers.

Taos
The Rio Grande and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains shape Taos’ rugged environment. Both geographic features are main tourist attractions. In the summer, rafters take to the river; in the winter, skiers flock to nearby ski resorts. North of town, the Taos Pueblo is a National Historic Landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most of its adobe structures were built between 1000 and 1450.

Taos Ski Valley
Visitors to Taos Ski Valley measure the quality of life by the foot—specifically, by the amount of snow the area receives. Skiing is the centerpiece of life during the winter months. The slopes host championship skiing competitions, as well as a popular wine festival. During the summer, the valley blooms with greenery and flowers. Hiking the trails is a popular pastime during fair weather.
