“Clean and comfortable”

The Houghton TraveLodge is clearly not the Taj Mahal but the room was clean and comfortable. I definitely felt I got my money's worth. The pillow-top bed was great.

“not my favorite”

The hotel location was perfect. The musty smell was a bit much. There was actually a dehumidifier running very loudly in our room. Our room was near an exit door, so that was pretty much all we heard all night. If you are just looking for a place to sleep, I would recommend this hotel.

Area recommendations

The downtown area was great. A lot of great restaurants, shops, and great views of the Lift bridge and canal.

“The old Kings Inn (Downtown) is back as Travelodge and at great prices”

I used to stay at the old Kings Inn / Bestwestern (Downtown) when I would go back up for homecoming or winter carnival. then it closed down for a few years and i would go to the Downtowner. The DT is ok but its really 70s. The (now) Travelodge is a LOT nicer. I only had one issue, the room smelled a little funky on my first night, I asked the hotel staff if they could spray some air freshener, and the next day it was a world better. the bathroom is nice and the pillow top beds are AMAZING (after a night of drinking). For a hotel in downtown Houghton, this one is once again the King.

Area recommendations

Givens... Ambassador, Dog House, DT, and go to the the Fish Market (top of Hancock across from the Mine) get some smoked fish and then some fried fish at the little trailer in the back of the parking lot on your way around the copper country. and stop by the Jam Pot and get some goodies from the Monks.

“Solid hotel in Houghton, must be the best Travelodge in the Chain”

Even though the hotel is old, it is probably the finest Travelodge in the chain. Almost always anytime I book a Travelodge, I grin and bear it expecting the absolute worst. This hotel, right downtown has a lot going for it. The misses-- the climb up the stairs to the third floor as it doesn't have an elevator. This is no Hilton, by anymeans, but the rooms are clean and nice, it has a nice breakfast and the pool and hottub and sauna are very nice. You can check out the downtown, it has a nice view of the lift bridge and there are some stores a bar and a restaurant for dinner right across the street. For a Travelodge--- 4 stars.

“Convenient location;the price is right”

This hotel is conveniently located to downtown shopping and eating and walking distance to the canal front and Isle Royale Ranger dock. It's an older building with narrow stairs and odd configuration for the different floors but it's got a very reasonable rate. I would stay there again.

Getting around

There is no real public transportation in this area. If you don't have a car to get around, you would miss out on a lot of the places to get to outside of Houghton.

What to pack

Bring boots with good tread if it's winter. Everything is hills and slippery.

“Would stay here again. Great location”

We were very pleased with the location of this motel. The staff was friendly and helpful. The motel is older but has been updared and was clean. Good breakfast. Pleasant stay. Be sure to visit the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum of Mich at the University.

Area recommendations

If you mean Houghton, downtown. If you mean Mentor, anywhere.

When to go

If you do not like snow, I do not reccoment winter.. We went in June and it was cool enough to need a jacket most of the time. We reccomend the A.E Seaman Mineral Museum ant the Michigan Technological University and the Quincy Mine just a little north of Houghton.

We were visiting our daughter at MTU. This hotel is very convenient to the university and downtown. You can walk to most places.

“Great for Hockey Weekends”
