Plan B on the way to Death Valley
We booked fairly late for our night before visiting Death Valley and had limited choice. Old motel with renovated rooms that provide the basics.

Small Jem in Independence
This small but comfortable room had everything I needed for a quick vacation - TV, wifi, coffee and a hot shower. The room was clean and quiet and the staff was very nice and helpful. The price for the room was very reasonable, especially compared to nearby Lone Pine. I look forward to staying here again.

Clean and comfortable
Slept well. Tiny room, but they gave us a free upgrade from the smallest because they weren't very busy mid-week. Had a microwave and fridge, which is good because the town has only two restaurants, and one is a Subway. Good place for a mid-trip overnighter.

perfect little motel - friendly staff
friendly check in, clean room, the shower could get a new shower head (minor issue) but again all in all, good room, the checkout was also really friendly there was also some confusion the hotel.com app showed the price incl. tax the hotel excl. the tax from his rates and applied them when you check in, but they even offered a refund which I declined (it's not worth the hassle) and I slept so well. If I'm around again I would consider to stay here again. I was really pleasant surprised how clean the place was.

Basic motel with large clean rooms
Checked in late after a long drive through Death Valley, and nowhere to eat in town except Subway. There is a restaurant within walking distance, but it was closed when we tried it (apparently it has no specific opening times!). Nearest towns with restaurants at least 15 miles away. Suggest you be prepared to travel this distance or eat before you arrive. Rooms above average size I would say for this type of strip motel. Also travelled some way to get breakfast in the morning.

Smalll But Clean
It's an older Mom & Pop style hotel. The rooms are tiny; maybe 12'x12'. The owners were very friendly. The cost was excessive for what you get, but there was a film festival going on in the area, so that is probably why it was higher than what it should normally have been.

Independence Courthouse Motel
This motel should not be on your recommend list. The room smelled of mildew, the room was very small, the bathroom was so small my husband had difficulty moving around, cars are parked two feet from the room window. There was a non stop motor noise through out the night. In addition, we arrived at 7 PM and found no place to eat in the town

As a one night stop was fine. the room although not big had all we needed. the welcome was friendly and we had no issues. There is no where really to eat in Independence so drove back to Lone Pine where there are a selection of restaurants

Very friendly owners.
We only stayed one night but it was a perfect stop for our road trip. The owners were really nice showed us to our rooms and explained a little about the area. We knew before staying there that Independence was really small and there wasn't anything to do but that was fine. Hotel rooms were standard. Had fridge & microwave TV and AC. Very quiet and perfect for a quick stop over.

Good but a bit pricey!
A very traditional US motel but the room and bathroom were clean if not the most modern. Ultimately a bit expensive for what was on offer.

Perfect stay for Manzanar
We went to Manzanar after an absurdly long drive and needed a place to fall down. This is the perfect stay for that. The town is small, quiet, and has a nice charm. You can walk to a convenience store and a cafe, which is about all the town has, really. The staff is incredibly nice, something lacking nowadays. The room was cheap and the bed was cozy. It felt like I was staying in someone's house! I would give this a perfect score, but the room itself was very, very tiny for two people. My wife could barely open her suitcase. Regardless, if you find yourself in the area and you are on a budget, stay here.

We stayed here overnight on our way to Mammoth Lakes. The place was easy to find and the owner was willing to wait for our late arrival, which was nice. There is not a lot to say... the place is very small, but is clean.

It Served The Purpose
We were looking for a place to stay for the weekend while we partisapated in a event in near by Lone Pine. The motel was what we expected, nothing less and nothing more. The 'town' of Independence does not have much. In hindsight, we should have paid more for a place in Lone Pine which was offered a fair share of restaurants for such a small town. If you are only pass ing through, Independance Courthouse Motel will serve its purpose just fine.

Great Location!!!
We were very pleased with the location. The young man Saib - was wonderful, he gave us great restaurant recommendations!! He was friendly, polite, and very knowledgeable. The room was comfortable and clean. It was wonderful to have a fridge and coffee maker. This was a one night before we embarked on a 45 mile hike up the mountains!!

So very nice!
This is a old-timey, roadside courtyard motel. If I hadn't had a reservation I probably would have driven on by. Glad I didn't. It was completely revamped and modernized inside. Small, yes, but not cramped and perfectly clean and maintained. The owner's pride was clearly evident as he showed each new guest to their rooms pointing out the amenities and advising them of the three restaurants of this tiny town. Be sure to visit the shady picnic area by the creek a few block north and the impressive locomotive restoration project.

Handy location post Yosemite trip
Although there is very little to do in Independence this Motel was in great location at the end of our day driving through and visiting Yosemite. Room was clean and more than adequate for our needs. Just had enough room for our 3 suitcases, appreciated the coffee maker and use of hair dryer. Nothing fancy but clean and comfortable. Subway across the road at garage was handy for light diner and managed to purchase bottle of NZ wine which was a treat.

Keeping in mind this is a very basic, little motel
We were looking for a place to stay on the way to Yosemite to break up the drive. We've been through Independence many times before and were aware that it is a very small town with nothing really to offer, so we were just looking for a clean, comfortable place to stay. We found it. We called the owner to let him know we'd be checking in after 11 pm. He made sure the key was accessible for us and stopped by himself while we were unpacking to make sure everything was ok. The room was very clean. The air conditioning worked. The shower was hot. And there was a stocked coffee maker in our room. We were happy and would stay there again. It is a simple place, with simple decor and a handy man who clearly is not a detail kind of guy, but it met our needs, was reasonably priced and appeared to be by far, one of the best options in the area.

Great stopover
We stayed at the Courthouse motel for one night before heading to the Death Valley. Great location. Room had everything including flatscreen TV, coffee, aircon and comfortable bed. It's compact and therefore not great for a longer stay. The only complaint we had was the shower. Firstly it was too short for me (I'm 5ft 11ins) and we could not get the tap to stop dripping. This meant my husband didn't have a good night's sleep.

Great value
Great value, we stayed one night on a road trip tour from Colorado to San Francisco. Not many options for evening dining close by, especially after 6pm. Great little diner/cafe across the road (Jenny's) which we used for breakfast. Some road nosie as the motel is close to the main road through the town but not too much of an issue. Wifi ok, AC ok but close to a bed so not 100% effective. Clean and tidy and good for the money, nice views of the courthouse and mountains behind. Polite and helpful staff.

On the way to Bishop or Lone Pine
Not too bad. Owners very friendly and helpful. Room very small and basic but also clean. Bed not real comfortable(lumpy & old). I stayed for two nights as I was working in Lone Pine and there were no rooms available there. When I returned from work first night I found that they didn't clean room. I was told they only clean up if you put the sign outside the door Maid Service/Do Not Disturb sign. I thought that was odd. Most places will clean room unless DND sign is out. No iron or ironing board but available if you ask. I'd stay again if I had to but prefer Lone Pine lodging. Oh and the only food available in town is Subway. Everything else has gone out of business. So if you want a meal you'll need to go to Lone Pine or Big Pine.

The room was tiny, and the fridge/microwave take up the entire closet. The fridge had a broken (actually missing) temperature control, so it ran at full force all night...and was very noisy. I finally unplugged it (and left the door open with a note strongly suggesting the hotel replace the unit). The outside porch light made the room bright as day all night long. That being said, the bed was comfortable, the staff was friendly, the room and grounds were tidy and well-kept. The hotel is conveniently located along 395. Independence has very few dining options, though, so I would recommend finding a restaurant in Bishop or Lone Pine before you check-in for the night.

Great for what we needed
Hotel service was fantastic and incredibly easy to deal with. We just needed a place to crash after a long hike, and this worked great. Bed and room was comfy, however the A/C unit is blocked by one bed and it cannot cool the whole room sufficiently. Other than that, awesome place. Next time I hike Whitney I'll again use this hotel.

Lovely Hotel in the Eastern Sierra
We loved staying the night at the Courthouse Motel in Independence on our road trip vacation. While it may look a little "inconspicuous" on the outside the Courthouse Motel is super cute on the inside, very cozy and comfortable. We had a double bed room which for American standards could be considered pretty small. And yet, it was so tastefully arranged that we really enjoyed our stay--much more than at a comparable chain brand. The town of Independence was also nice to walk through with the pooch. We would definitely stay here again.

Julie has been gracious both times that I've stayed. The room had been recently updated. Know that this is an older motel and don't expect a Las Vegas high-end room. I was comfortable and appreciated the convenience.

My stay was very nice. The staff are very friendly, attentive and informative. The room was nice and would be good for short or long term stays. Microwave, mini-fridge, coffeemaker, hair dryer and other amenities. Not a bigger motel so if you like it quieter, relaxful with less noise, people and traffic, this is the place to stay! I am definitely coming back!

O.K., but not staying again.
We usually stay in Bishop on the way back to San Diego from Lake Tahoe, but I forgot to make a reservation, and tried to make one in Lone Pine. Then saw the price for the Courthouse Motel In Independence was pretty good, so made reservation there. Now I would say the price was too high. The motel is obviously a very old place which they have tried to fix up, but it was a really tiny room, so was hard for two people to walk around in it. The bed was up against the wall on one side, and although there was a table with one chair, the chair was in the way if one person sat in it. The tap in the bathtub was leaking all night, which was a worry, especially since we have such a water shortage in California. There obviously was no breakfast provided, since it was such an old, very small motel. Although the owner/manager was nice, all in all, we wouldn't stay there again.
