“Sumengen- excellent location and service with a smile! :)”

Excellent location, lovely rooms though a little small, fantastic neighbourhood, very nice people...in fact the only thing this hotel lacked was a proper restaurant and room service. My sisters and I had a phenomenal time and we are already planning our next trip to turkey and we will definitely stay at the same hotel as we loved the whole area!!! very clean and the most incredible breakfast spread every morning!! oh and awesome coffee :)

Area recommendations
Definitely Sultanahmet but make sure if you go to this area u stay close to the blue mosque or sumengen hotel as the restaurants/cafe's, the shopping, the area itself as well as the nearness to the Blue Mosque, Topkapi, and Aya Sofia made it fantastic for us. plus it's just ten min from the Grand Bazaar if you want to walk it and it's really clean! the people are really friendly and very charming!
When to go
We were in Istanbul from the 2nd till the 8th of December and i think this was the best time as there weren't that many tourists and yet it was bustling and alive!! :)

Booked though expedia. took Qatar air which, as usual, was great :)
Getting around
Just pick up a map, ask the hotel reception to mark the routes for you and walk out!! :) that's the best way to see Istanbul!
What to pack
If you're going when it's cold and for a week then this is what u MUST pack: 1 long warm coat 2-3 thick sweaters 7-8 t shirts ( in case it rains) 1 pair of thick boots or 2 thick sneakers 4 thick black track pants or 2 pairs of jeans and 2 tracks 7-8 pairs of socks (again in case it rains) 1 umbrella Gloves, Thick woolen scarf, and a woolen cap that covers your ears oh and an extra duffel baf cuz u're bound to want to buy out the place ;)
Must see
Blue Mosque, Aya Sofia, Topkapi, Grand Bazaar, Spice bazaar, Mevlevi Ceremony at the Hodja Pasha, the Palaces, Baghdad Cadessi (street), the harbour/water front, the highest point of Istanbul, the Bosphorus cruise, Istenye Park... hmmm honestly I would recommend that you see ALL of Istanbul!!! it's ...breathtaking!
Shopping
the Pashabahce at Istenye! the Grand bazaar and Spice Bazaar! one thing you must NOT forget to do is BARGAIN!!! if they say 1000 you say 200 and then let them give it to u for 450 max!!! they LOVE it when you bargain with them :) you must also pick up a couple of turkish words as it makes them feel really good when u say "thank you" to them in their own language. Apart from that everyone does speak rudimentary English. btw thank you in trukish is pronounced "tea-sugar and a dream" ;)
Dining
ALL the restaurants near the Blue Mosque and topkapi area are great!!! try out ALL their Teas!!! their apple and rose are phenomenal!! and no matter how much u eat, if you have their apple or mint tea after meals u feel light again! :) Pide (turkish pizza) is a must!! Iskander (another must!) all their Kebaps (kababs) hot, freshly Roasted chestnuts available at every corner doner kabab roll turkish salami- it's kosher/halal honestly- EVERYTHING!!! when u're there don't have anything but turkish cuisine! we had it for 7 days straight and couldn't get enough of it :)

It's a place like no other...and I've travelled the world so i can honestly say that. it's not just charming and romantic but historical and yet modern and the people smell divine!!!! i can't wait to go back!!!!!!

“Fabulous Hotel!!!”

The Hotel is small, very clean, very cute, the staff is excellent, two blocks from Hagia Sofia and Blue Mosque, pretty little restaurants and stores on the streets nearby, it really is very recomendable!!

“Convenient place with minor obstacles”

The hotel is clean and good located. The breakfast was very good in my taste with nice view from the restaurant. The personnel are friendly and helpful. The internet wireless signal is week and slow. The soundproof quality of the room is not good at all.

“Great Location”

The Sumengen is located in the heart of the tourist section of Istanbul. The Blue Mosque, the Aya Sofia and the main attractions of the old section of Istanbul are all within walking distance. The breakfast room has great views of the Bosphorus. Friendly and helpful staff.

“Will definitely go back to this hotel.”

Very nice hotel and staff, the check out process took 10 seconds, breakfast was amazing, Room view was very fine, its location is perfect train at the back, tram and bus in front. It was amazing experience, this hotel will be my first choice if I ever visit Istanbul back.

“Great location!”

This hotel had a great location, just a couple of blocks behind the Blue Mosque. ATMs are located up between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. There are a number of appealing shops, including the Cavalry Market (the street running just behind the Blue Mosque). It is a short walk to the tram. Topkapi is also a short walk, just beyond Hagia Sophia. The hotel room was large, with a king-size bed, as requested. The room lacked a comfortable chair for sitting and reading. The lighting was also rather limited. The shower surround was of a type that usually leaks and it leaked badly. The wireless internet connection was only "up" about 50% of the time. The breakfast room had a great view of the Bosporous. The breakfast layout was fairly good. Cabs were readily obtainable right in front of the hotel. There were good restaurants in the area. Overall, great location and a pretty good value.

Area recommendations
The areas around the Blue Mosque have become very attuned to tourist needs. Prices are higher here, but the level of services is probably more suitable for visitors. A ferry ride across the Bosporous to Uskudar is a great excursion.

“Great value for money”

“Excellent place to stay!”

Excellent place to stay! The hotel is located in a very convenient neighborhood, within walking distance from everything worth seeing. The breakfast buffet was superb and the view from the dining-room spectacular. The only problem was that the central heating in the room was turned off, during very cold January days- though the room was still fairly warm. We would certainly return to the hotel...

Area recommendations
Sultanahmet is a spectacular place- great monuments everywhere. Outstanding churches, mosques and more to see... Beyoglu is also very lively and pleasant. Istanbul is a city to walk! Stroll around its streets and you will discover another world magical and still very contemporary...

Santa Sofia (search the remaining mosaics!), Top Kapi, Blue Mosque, Kariye Camii (the most amazing Byzantine art -mosaics and frescoes- you have ever seen!), Fatiye Camii, the Egyptian Bazaar, and Justinian's Cistern AT LEAST...

“Pleasant Istanbul Break”

The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. The room was quiet, spacious and more comfortable than we expected in this price range. Our room was not at the front but we were not disturbed by the call to prayer from the nearby mosques. The location is ideal for sightseeing and most major attractions as well as many restaurants and bars are within a pleasant stroll. we found the breakfast excellent with a large range of local breads and cakes as well as muesli and cheese. If you demand a typical western cooked breakfast you would be less happy.

Traveler's tip
The restaurant does not serve food in the evening but the room is left open and has a balcony. Take your own drinks and relax with nice undisturbed views over the Bosphorus.
