    The modern resort town of Ixtapa lies about 5 km (3 mi) north of Zihuatanejo. Funded by the National Tourism Development Fund, Ixtapa was built from the ground up, with construction beginning in 1968. Set on a wide bay, the city’s 2-mile beachfront is lined with high-rise hotels, many from well-known chains. The city has several colonial- and modern-style malls connected by plazas and gardens.
