A real piece of history
This hotel is a real piece of history and is decorated and furnished accordingly, so don't expect king sized modern beds and air conditioning. However, if , like me, you appreciate people taking the effort to give you an unforgettable experience of how things used to be, this is the place. The town itself is a lovely reminder of what the Gold Country was like in the late 1800s with lots of old buildings along a main street. The hotel sits in the middle of the town and looks just like it must have looked then. The rooms are clean but with only the basic comforts which you might have expected then. The furnishings - including the bed - are all period. Air conditioning is provided by a ceiling fan and an opened window. However, our room did have access to the balcony where you can sit and relax as the sun goes down. The hotel has a pool to the rear, a saloon bar, again looking very authentic, and an excellent restaurant. So, if you like a bit of history, this is the place to stay.

Forget Weekends
Spent one night at this hotel. Charming but in need of tremendous refurbishing. When you book, ask for a room with a bathroom. Specifically ask for one as far away from the bar as possible. My husband and I were directly over the bar. The music was so loud I thought our bed was levitating off the floor. I actually called down to Jackson to see if there were rooms available. Unfortunately, NOT. Music did not stop until midnight. We will not be returning. I did hear their food is wonderful, but we did not dine there.

A different experience
Due to snow storm we had to find a place quickly because the road was closed. Searching on Internet we found this option nearby. If you are looking for a very rustic and spartane hotel where you will feel back in 1800's this is the place. No modern amenities such as frigobar, TV, private bathroom (it is outside your room), elevator, air conditioner are available. However, Internet is available for free. It's a very old building with noisy floor and thin walls. The breakfast is included but is quite simple with very limited options. It's a different experience that was not that looking for.

It is a quaint, clean, historic OLD hotel, and the staff were pleasant. However, because it's an old hotel, the room was small, the floor was creaky and you could hear noises from next door and outside.

Truly historical and charm in that however the shower did not drain adequately and the Saturday night party going on in the saloon was extremely loud despite the provided ear plugs. The walls were rattling. It would have been great had we had a good night sleep.

UNBELIEVEABLE DUMP
We were looking for a unique weekend get away in Sutter Creek and chose this hotel because of its proximately and pool. The pictures looked very nice, like a boutique period hotel and appeared to be what we were looking for. We booked the suite that opened to a beautiful looking pool which we thought we would use to swim and relax. We were escorted to the room by a friendly young women and let in. We almost left that very instant looking at the unsecured door which appeared to have been kicked in and un-repaired. The room which was a dump was furnished with third hand thrift store furniture, broken and belonged in a landfill. We checked the internet for another room in the area and all hotels with pools were sold out so we decided to tough it out for the night. The place was clean and the bed was nice but we over looked tile in the shower falling off the wall, a sink which didn't drain, broken furniture, and 13 inch TV which played VCR's. That night the band in the bar above our room played until midnight and it was loud. We found ear plugs in the drawer in the room but nothing was said to us at check in or before. The next day we found a blues band was playing for the afternoon by the pool and the hotel began setting up chairs outside our room on the "terrace". The pool was not even for guests only, it also doubled as the community pool with a daily fee and was full of play full young children. Do not stay here. It needs to be removed from Hotels.com.

NO frills
From the no closet, no plumbing, shared bathroom, window to balcony would have been nice except for cigar smoking dude's smoke wafting in, no continental breakfast (as advertised), hang my coat on headboard finial (it falls off, rubber cemented on shabbily) pool not filled, very hot weather, got slivers in my socks from rough, splintery wood flooring, only good things were nice staff and good beer on tap in bar. Room was costly and "historic" was all we got. Lesson learned, "historic" means high priced and NO frills. Not even a bathroom.

Exploring the history and past of California
My daughter and I love to see buildings and relics of the gold mining days. The hotel and surroundings take you back to what life was like 100 years ago. The staff was so accommodating and friendly we felt very comfortable the moment we walked in the door. The hotel is dog friendly and we were able to take our pom and Chihuahua into the bar where excellent food and drinks were served. There are little shops across the street with vintage clothing and art.. A winery is conveniently located at the corner across from a delightful small park.

Charming but...
Be sure to ask for a room with the bathroom in your room; a private bath is not necessarily in your room. Although we could open a window (no screen) you cannot control the temperature in your room. Bring your own hair dryer. But, if you're looking for charming this is your place and the food was very good in the restaurant and the staff is very nice and helpful. And, if you're looking for exercise, there is no elevator. You need to remember this hotel is over 100 years old -- hence "Historic" Hotel Leger.

The hotel was ok. I do understand that it is a "historic" hotel and they're trying to preserve as much of the "old way" hotels were done, but it still can stand to have some upgrades.

Priceless Memories
Upon receiving room confirmation I proceeded to walk around town. The nice stroll to your local cemetery was both refreshing and exhilarating from the fresh winter air, the hilly terrain and walk which strengthen my legs and overall tranquility and serene setting again con tribute to my priceless memory. Although I was alone without my wife I felt young again as I enjoyed your local area along with your fine food and great chef! Looking forward to another trip to Leger's as I am only four hours away.(Past visits) I love swimming at Mokelumne River in Summer and Walk through Murphy's.

This is an old historic hotel. Not for everyone but if you want some Good Gold Rush Culture and a special experience these were our highlights: Creaky Wood Floors, Old Glass Windows Escapes, Large Shared Old West Balcony, Special Hidden spaces in the Basement, Pool & Garden Area. The local Dog is an old Yellow Lab named Boomer, he watches over the open deck of the public library where you can check on the old used books. There is a nice children's park next door to the library which is just a couple doors down from the hotel. Cute Shops, but they were close when we were there, so now we have to go back!

Historic Hotel turned Nightclub
This historic hotel is off the beaten path, with not much going on around it. They have taken to put their effort into hosting night time music events at the hotel. I did not know this, so my weekend trip kept me up past midnight both nights with loud music.

Old, Rustic, Charming, and Delicious.
This is a very old hotel. The exterior wall of our room was made of stone and there were many interesting architectural features to the building. Most rooms share an unattached bathroom in the hall. Hotels.com listed our room (#9) as having a private bath when we booked, but that was not accurate. The floors creak and are not completely level which is okay because it adds to the ambiance of this historical old hotel. There are no phones or TVs in the rooms and there was only one outlet in ours. We had to unplug the lamp to charge our cell phones. There is wine tasting and a few unique shops all an easy walk down the street, although few were open on Sunday. The weather was cool and wet during our visit, but the pool and shady grounds would be nice when it's hot. The Whitewater Grill and Saloon downstairs is very good. We ate dinner and breakfast there and both were great. I was pleasantly surprised at the variety on the menu considering the remote and rural location. The saloon seems to be the social center of town and gets a fair number of local patrons on a regular basis. Calaveras County is home to many smaller wineries so this is a good place to stay for a wine tasting tour. It's an easy drive to the casino in Jackson, or to Angels Camp and Murphys. The staff was helpful, the building needed some cosmetic work (cracked tiles and grout, gaps between walls).

One stop shopping
We checked in on a last minute whim. What we found was an accommodating and friendly staff, comfortable rooms (be ready for the creaks and squeaks of an old structure), a fun bar and pretty decent food. Once we arrived, we never left the hotel, it had everything for our overnight adventure.

Old historic hotel in cute town
The best thing Hotel Leger has going for it is, is the cute town it is located in - Mokelumne Hill in the Gold Country of California. The hotel is cute and quaint from the outside, our room, George's Room, was pleasingly furnished with antique furniture. The room was quite tiny, with not much room to move around the full size bed. The main drawback was the bathroom (although private) was across the hall! I did not realize this when I booked the room. In my opinion, the 2 rooms are in need of updating - water stained wallpaper and old rusty linoleum floor in bathroom. We had breakfast in the WhiteWater Grill which was basic but good. I suppose if you are looking for an authentic old time country hotel - this may be your place - but we will try some place different next time.

Hotel on a hill.
No T.V. in the rooms, also no in-room bathrooms. None of this is included in the description of the hotel or rooms. They really need to include all of this. I understand that it was built in the 1800's but if you are not familiar with the area you can get lost. Also they do not offer a free breakfast. Just poor advertisement all the way around.

Old gold-country friendly hotel
Old gold-country means not fancy, a bit funky, not "cookie cutter". We had fresh bedding, a clean ( not fancy) bathroom, good light. Floors creak alot. The wall between our room and the next room was thin; we spoke with our fellow guest, and we all tried to be quiet. Very sunny, wonderful light in parlor, room. Really has the flavor of "old gold country". We have visited the area and its hotels for years. No buyer has upgraded hotel to "fancy". It is the genuine thing.

Enjoyed the historic theme of this era
The history of this area in the 1850s is unique in the world, and staying at this hotel allows guests to imagine what life would be like in those times. One the plus side, the staff was very friendly and accommodating, and the place was clean and well-preserved. Unfortunately, the pool was not usable as we had hoped it would be, and it was not clear prior to our arrival that all rooms did not have a bathroom included. The most significant problem, however, was that no staff remained on premises during the night to enforce the guest rules ...rules such as no smoking, no noise after midnight, no using the community bathroom unless it was assigned to your specific guest room, etc.

Classic hotel in gold rush country
If you're looking to stay in an old-time hotel that makes you feel like you're back in the Gold Rush, then this is it. This old hotel has character but not a lot of modern amenities. The walls are thin and the floors creek, so you can hear your neighbors and the music downstairs during live music nights, and there are no TVs. However, it does make you feel like you're living in a forgotten era. So keep that in mind when you're booking your reservation. On a very positive note, the restaurant downstairs served a magnificent breakfast.

Not much else in the area with available rooms. So I guess I should not be picky. The rooms take you back to the way things, I assume were at the turn of the the 1900's. Gold rush days. Community bathrooms. Room just big enought to walk around the bed no floor covering. Noise, and creeky. IT'S NOT for a business trip!!!

Authentic Gold Country Experience
It was fun. It's an old hotel from the 19th century gold rush days. The staff was better than great. We will go back. If you're looking for a modern hotel or motel this is not it. If you love history and atmosphere don't miss this place. There's a good breakfast in the hotel from a restaurant in the hotel.

We love Hotel Leger
We love this hotel, and the town. totally unique, full of history, and the locals are incredibly friendly and helpful. The bed was comfortable and the room was spacious, with an outside balcony. It's not your standard hotel, and some comforts are missing, but having the restaurant and bar with constant entertainment right downstairs, with great local walks, and the Mokelumne River nearby - all this makes up for it. The service was great, even though everyone was exhausted from the aftermath of the fire.

Uniquely beautiful small town historic hotel
We had a great time and will return. It's a combination of many factors - historical buildings, great and friendly locals, a convenient and beautiful very old hotel, and incredible service.Updating the bathrooms, training the cleaners, and repairing things like broken windows would get us there a lot more frequently. Couldn't be a more interesting place for a unique California visit.
