“Comfort in(n) Jacksonville Beach”

This trip over the first weekend in December 2011 marks the third time I have stayed at the Comfort Inn Oceanfront on Jacksonville Beach. Each visit has been wonderful, and easily better than 2 stars, so this is my first review. The hotel is situated right on the beach about 10 blocks north of Jacksonville Beach's nightlife area, which is a plus after you're done partying as it is removed from the noise. It features an enormous outdoor swimming pool area sheltered from ocean breezes reminiscent of those found in Las Vegas casino resorts complete with grotto-like waterfalls. The full complimentary breakfast includes hot scrambled eggs, sausage, waffles (different flavors cooked by an enthusiastic staff person each day!), pastries, oatmeal, yogurt, fresh fruit, juice, and of course coffee (which is available all day). There are also two internet ready computers in an easily accessible business area. I have always stayed on the oceanfront side of the hotel, so cannot speak to the quality of the rooms on the other sides, but I certainly cannot complain about my rooms; these were consistently spacious, clean, and welcoming with a relaxing view-deck, which could be closed off to keep out light if need be. I had no trouble at all sleeping in the beds. Best of all, the wait staff was quite friendly. Even if I wasn't visiting family, I would want to stay at the Comfort Inn Oceanfront in Jacksonville Beach. It is highly recommended.

Area recommendations
I would say, depending on a traveler's age group, that the scene gets "older" the further south along the coast you go: Jacksonville Beach, where the Comfort Inn I stayed at is located, is geared toward the 20 and 30-something crowd. There is a lively bar scene concentrated around the end of Beach Blvd. Neptune Beach, just a few miles north, has lots of boutique shops, and was decorated with Christmas paraphernalia at the time I visited the first weekend in December. This seemed like the most "kid"-friendly area. Ponte Vedra Beach, just a few miles south, is a more upscale community for those seeking a romantic and quiet getaway. My grandmother resides in an assisted living community there, which is beautifully landscaped. This area has limited beach access as it is primarily made up of country clubs and private residences. I do not recommend going into downtown Jacksonville if you can help it. Instead, take a side trip north to quaint Fernandina Beach (I had some absolutely fresh shrimp there!), or south to historic St. Augustine.
When to go
Just about anytime of the year should be good.
Getting there
Take 9A south from the airport, exit on Butler Blvd east toward the ocean, then head north to Jacksonville Beach. I do not recommend either Beach Blvd or Atlantic Blvd as east-west connectors because of the traffic lights.
Getting around
Definitely get a rental car. They are easy to obtain and drop-off at the airport.
What to pack
Swim gear for being on the coast, and evening wear for going out.
Must see
St. Augustine - makes for a great day trip south along scenic A1A; has a cool alligator farm for the kids, and plenty of well-preserved history for adults
Shopping
Neptune Beach - boutique shops all within walking distance of each other Jacksonville Landing - on the downtown riverfront
Dining
The Homestead (aka "The Copperpot") - southern fried chicken in an old-style lodge Lulu's - nicely situated on the river Outback Crab Shack - for a real taste of Florida swamp (try the crayfish)

“Above average stay”

On the beach with partial ocean views which was great. Big room, all services included and laundry facilities available. Breakfast a bit stale. Free apple cider was nice.

“Very nice beachfront hotel on Jax Beach”

Was a Three Star "secret" hotel for Thanksgiving and we could not have been happier. The service was wonderful, the amenities were great, the balcony & view was terrific. Only good things to say about the hotel. We expect to return soon!

“Wonderful atmospher and people!”

We had a wonderful stay and will stay again. The location was perfect for walking the beach and then crusing all the places along the beach. The employees/staff were all very kind and accomidating to our needs.

“very nice!”

Staff were very friendly behind the desk and at the breakfast. Minor details needing attention but overall very nice. Would recommend to anyone and would definitely come back!!

Friendly neighborhood however ... some homes appear a bit shady...we were not too concerned.

“Receive what you pay for”

Lock on the door was not secure, the room although spacious was not very well appointed, many stains on the carpet, the air conditioning was noisy, the bathroom shower dripped all night, the TV was a throughback to the 70s and the iron didn't work. The food area was not particularly clean. Overall, the staff were cordial but didn't go out of their way to make you welcome.

“best value for your money”

I was expecting an ordinary hotel for the money they charge per room. But the room and service were excellent with 3 working new elevators, ocean view, free nice hot breakfast, free parking. it worth every penny.
