Lovely turn of the century resort. A little hard to find but worth the search. If you are into large modern hotel rooms its not for you. More like an old inkeepers cottage. Great breakfast. Make sure its what you want because they give refunds on cancellations.

My friend and I attended a quilt show that was 3 days long. The hotel was very close to everything we needed to see and buses ran the entire day to get you from one place to the next. It was a great area and the people at the hotel made you feel like you were part of their family. Loved the place and will stay again. It was very charming and relaxing.

Gorgeous hotel and lakeside community. The innkeepers are very friendly and professional with delicious meals and personal care. You will fall in love with Chautaqua! Only caution is not to rely on GPS to get you to the hotel. The community is gated and the street names are impossible to find if you aren't aware you need to approach the closed gate (even though when I was there the gate was closed, not attended, at it wasn't clear that the hotel I was staying in is behind there).

Adorable literary-themed hotel in ChautauquaPosted Sep 3, 2014 on Hotels.com
We booked our stay at the Spencer Hotel on a whim, and were very pleased with how it turned out! While this is a hotel, it feels more like a bed-and-breakfast; each room has a different theme and is decorated to reflect that, there's a lovely sitting room with board games galore, and tasty breakfast is served up each morning by the owners! We were NOT there during the Chautauqua Institution's season, which is probably a very different experience. But our room was clean and bright, the bed was comfortable, and it's located right in the middle of Chautauqua, so walking around was easy peasy. We'd definitely suggest checking it out!

COZY AND QUAINT BED AND BREAKFASTPosted Jun 10, 2014 on Hotels.com
The room is definitely smaller than the pictures make it out to look but it was big enough for my 2 night stay with my daughter. The staff COULD NOT have been more friendly or accomodating. The entire grounds of the Institute that the Spencer hotel is located on are very well manicured. I would have loved to have more time to walk around and explore. I was there during an off season but I was told if you go during peak season that you are required to pay an additional fee to get in and out of the Institute besides what you pay for your hotel cost. I would definitely go back during off season but would not pay the additional cost to go during peak season.

Pros: nothing but the location
Cons: the rooms have to be upgraded
My husband and I went to the Spencer Hotel because we were attending a wedding in Chattaqua. We booked 2 nights and landed up walking away from the paid hotel to go to another hotel with much finer qualities and half the price. Our room was so small - the bathroom could only hold one person at a time, you had to stay in the shower while it warmed up if you didnt want to flood the place. we moved into our new room ( for half the price) where we had 20 ft ceilings, a king size bed with 2 night stands ( spencer had one) a huge bathroom suite and a balcony with furniture to seat 10 or more- extremely elegant, spacious- we were extremely disappointed with the Spencer House and would not recommend it to anyone.

Excellent location and great staffPosted Aug 7, 2013 on Hotels.com
The Spencer is a lovely hotel in an excellent location. The staff, especially Chris, is very helpful. Issues: no stand-up shower in my room (just a bath tub with a handheld shower); the elevator wasn't working which wasn't a problem for me but I' was concerned for the older guests; no ability to open windows (they were sealed shut); quality of breakfast was marginal, however the dining room, service, and other guests made up for it.
