Nice central value hotel that could be great...Posted Nov 26, 2014
Got off to a bad start when having taken the 15 min Gautrain (excellent by the way) to Sandton, I had to wait 15 mins for the shuttle to the hotel. The shuttle driver didn't offer any greeting nor even a smile... he just looked solemn, spoke on his phone and ignored us. The front desk staff and restaurant staff were fantastic. The shuttle drivers ruin the hotel experience and should be replaced or retrained

Well Located Hotel in SandtonPosted Nov 3, 2014
Pros: The gardens are well kept and peaceful.
Cons: More control over the people coming and going in the buildings (we were awakened at 4:00 a.m. by a loud male conversation in the corridor).
Location: Excellent restaurants and shopping within an easy 10 minute walk of the hotel.
The concept of this hotel is a number of buildings linked by gardens and small pools with lounge chairs. Overall impression is that the place could use a good face lift as it is getting a bit shabby. Prices are good which make it a popular spot. If you have time to use the facilities (the small pools and lounge chairs) it might be a charming place to stay; for others probably just adequate with much nicer hotels in close proximity. Ideally located to Nelson Mandela Square and superb chopping. Safe walk of less than 10 minutes.

Stay was good. Hotel location is perfectPosted Oct 28, 2014
Pros: wifi is great and security is also there plus the shuttle service
Cons: Even though there is a shuttle service it only goes to places nearby where one can walk to. They could add up locations of interest that is a bit away
Location: Location is great. Shopping center and lots of restaurants nearby on Mandela square. Lots of night life places around to and the area is secured
overall experience is good. Having a shuttle service to move around the hotel was a big plus

Excellent locationPosted Oct 27, 2014
Protea hotel balalaika is located in upmarket Sandton and within 5 minutes walking distance to the Sandton city mall. Its also within a 10 mins drive to the train station.Though the hotel can do with an upgrade of ambience for comfort its staff (especially the concierge and service staff, cant say the same about front desk staff) are very friendly and helpful.

Nice hotel close to the Sandton Convention Centre.Posted Oct 14, 2014
Pros: The hotel is just a 5 minute walk away from Nelson Mandela Square. The hotel has an excellent restaurant ( The Bull Run). Free wifi is good.
Location: I like the fact that the hotel is just a 5 minute walk away from Nelson Mandela Square which has lots of shops, bars and restaurants.
I travelled to South Africa on a business trip as my company were participating at an exhibition called Africa Expo. The location for the exhibition was Sandton Convention Centre so I wanted to stay in a hotel within walking distance. Having stayed at the Balalaika hotel previously I knew this was a good option as it is just a 5 minute walk.

Reasonably priced, lovely accommodation in SandtonPosted Oct 5, 2014
Pros: Price is very good. Clean, comfortable room. Excellent breakfast. Very helpful staff. Lovely garden, pool, fitness center.
Location: Mall and craft market are walking distance. Don't walk at night or alone.
A very nice hotel to stay in if you are going to Johannesburg. Walking distance to a huge mall, and to a craft market. Don't drive as parking is very expensive and driving dangerous. We took a shuttle from the airport, or you can take the train. After spending a day recovering from the flight, we picked up our rental just 2 blocks away from the hotel. Pretty hotel, well maintained, lovely garden. 2 bedroom suite a bargain for 2 couples. Great breakfast included and the restaurant has very good food in the evening.

Convenience & pricePosted Sep 24, 2014
This is an old-style hotel situated around lovely gardens and pools, very conveniently located to the Gautrain Sandton stop and convention center. Shuttle service to/from the train station is provided free, but the walk is just 6-7 blocks and completely safe, even at night. The breakfast buffet is generous. Things are a little tattered around the edges, but overall everything is just fine. One drawback is the WiFi service, which tho free, is not secure and could get touchy at times.

Impersonal and rambling hotel of mediocre standardPosted Sep 13, 2014
Staff try but fall to make for a great experience. Hotel has a poor drive up arrangement. No sooner that you arrive and start unpacking and checking in than you're blocking the access for the next drive in customer. Car parking is five minutes away! The hotel is a maze/warren and you find yourself walking five or more minutes to and from your room to receiption or restaurant or bar. Room was comfortable but I won't stay there again.

Old design not in line with modern hotel comfort.Posted Aug 8, 2014
Pros: The room was comfortable. Not enough staff to guide you in weird passages. The restaurant areas was not inviting and too far from the room.
Cons: The directional signage and value.
Location: Good location
I did not enjoy the overall experience as the room numbers and location was a mission to find. You could get lost as I did. The pathways to the rooms was cold and dark out door areas.
