Just a short drive from the historic city of Charleston lies the beautiful island of Kiawah, a privately gated beachfront resort community. Carefully designed to preserve the island's semitropical beauty, Kiawah Island's collection of privately owned properties blend artfully with the natural landscape. Kiawah's environmentally sensitive design encourages peaceful coexistence between the island's wildlife and modern convenience, with a variety of shops and restaurants. The island's wide beach, maritime forest, and sweeping sand dunes take center stage. Visitors flock to Kiawah for a serene and uncrowded retreat where they're apt to spot any number of deer, osprey, great blue heron and loggerhead turtles.
Kiawah Island's natural beauty is unsurpassed and the main attraction is the hard-packed ten miles of sandy beach. Sloping gently into the surf, the Kiawah beach is an ideal spot for swimming, beachcombing and sunbathing. Taking a dip in the Atlantic Ocean is free fun! There are no general use pools on Kiawah Island, so if pool access is important, please be sure to request a property which offers a neighborhood swimming pool. 2- and 3-bedroom cottages with pool access are available. It is important to know that none of the neighborhood pools are heated.
The beach is also perfect for jogging or bike riding, as are the Island's 30+ miles of bike trails extending from one end of the island to the other and winding through dense woodlands and along hidden waterways. The 21-acre Night Heron Park also features basketball and volleyball courts, soccer fields, a nature center, and a fitness trail complete with cardio and strength training stations.
With five championship courses designed by some of the industry's heavyweights, Kiawah has staked its claim in the golf world as a world-class destination. The topped-ranked Ocean Course, designed by Pete Dye, was featured in the movie The Legend of Bagger Vance. Consistently names one of the top 100 golf resorts in the world, the island is legendary amongst world golfers.
It's no secret that Kiawah is a favorite family destination. Besides the island's natural beauty and the unparalleled opportunity for casual relaxation and unstructured fun, there are also programs designed to help guests and their children maximize their vacation experience. A fully supervised day camp is available in the summer, and teen activities range from comedy improv workshops to scavenger hunts and much more.
Just 40 minutes away lies historic Charleston, South Carolina, chock-full of attractions and tours. Sample local seafood and Lowcountry fare at any number of great dining establishments. And shopping? A variety of open-air markets , haute couture boutiques, and interesting antique shops beckon. No matter what your interests, there's something for you at Kiawah Island.
