We have a family room at the lodge which is fairly basic but fantastic ... has everything we need and comfortable to sleep. It is in the perfect spot with the beach across the road and a 1-5 min walk to all restaurants, shops etc. Love the holiday vibe of this place! Definitely want to come back and stay longer.

Great location but horribly designed backpackers. Way over priced for what it is. Kitchen and bathrooms stink. Needs windows in the bathroom. The outdoor area was horrible. Needs grass. Glad we werent there on a hot day. No aircon amd rooms just hot. We had a private room but felt sorry for thw backpackers. The bunkneds must be horrid. Kitchen needs a dishwasher and new ventilation system and a whole set of new appliances. For thw prices they charge they should improve it. Quite embarrassing really if this is what NZ is providing tourists.

Nothing was every a problem for the staff, nice cool chill feel to the place. Didn’t like the wait to use the kitchen but that will always happen in a communal kitchen

The locations is awesome, it is close to the beach and the cruise to Abel Tasman park. The room was clean but the bathroom was terrible. The fan did not work properly so it was always wet, what resulted in a terrible smell. Because we traveled during off-season the reception closed at around 4 pm. This was not ideal, especially because we had wifi codes that only lasted 24 hours and expired that evening. Our stay overall was okay, but we did not feel comfortable enough to shower which could be even worse in the summer time.

Thank you for your review. We are glad you enjoyed your time in this beautiful part of the country. We are sorry to hear you felt that you were unable to use the shower. We have been making improvements on all en suite and communal bathrooms as a winter project as we were aware they were due for an upgrade. Although this does not help with your particular experience we do hope you may consider coming to re visit us if you are ever in the area again.

Convenient and well located
Convenient for the boat to Abel Tasman but pretty basic en suite accommodation - more 'Flashpackers' than hotel! However Kaiteriteri is a beautiful location.

Poor hotel/hostel wouldn't recommend
Worse kitchen I was in whilst travelling NZ. Not sure if it was the kiwi people stopping at the time but was a horrible smell and extremely dirty. The room was very basic and heater only ran for a short time which wasn't ideal to dry our clothes after it had been raining again.

Basic backpacker hostel
The hostel is very basic but the rooms are functional. The room smelled slightly of damp and the shower in the en suite made the whole bathroom floor wet which was annoying. For the price, it’s an average backpackers hostel - you get what you pay for!

Struggling for sleep in Kaiteriteri
Pros: Staff was friendly and helpful. We'd called earlier since we would be arriving after hours, and were told that they would leave us the key. However, when we got there, we realised there was a mixup with them not having left us the key, but they were able to sort it out quickly Very convenient location, right across from beach and next to restaurants and beach shops. Boating trips pick you up less than 5 mins walk away. Cons: Mattress seemed very old and uncomfortable and would sink in when you sat / slept on it, till you could feel the springs. No toiletries provided, even though we had a private room with ensuite bathroom. Communal kitchen wasn't very clean. No free WiFi and has to be bought separately. We stayed during a heatwave (close to 34C) in the South Island. Fan provided was a joke, you had to sit less than a foot from it to feel the fan breeze. We had to open the windows, but there was no breeze since there are buildings around the hotel, also, since they don't have any screen on the windows, we had quite a few insects crawling in. Also, open windows meant that we were kept awake by all the folks chatting outside late into the night. Basically, this is like a hostel. Even if you get a private room with ensuite bathroom, don't expect more than a hostel. Overall, didn't feel like it was good value for the cost of the room.

Nice hotel close to beach
Hotel was used by Kiwi Experience so lots of yougsters coming and going. However, hotel was not too noisy and very covenient for access to Abel Tasman National Park. Only slight downside was that our room was above kitchin area and smell of burnt toast was evident. Generally very good experience.

Great budget accommodation for a family
Kaiteriteri beach is one of the best beaches in NZ and the Kaiteri Lodge is just across the road - great location. Our room had two bunks and a queen bed so great for a family of five. It has backpacker style shared kitchen facilities which we found much better than the limited kitchen facilities in most motels at a similar price level. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Good location for beach and sea based trips
When we arrived there was a huge queue to book in. The receptionist was very nice and friendly but there were too many for one person to deal with. We went for a walk and came back after the coach party were sorted. The room itself was disappointing, cleanliness was not of a good enough standard. The top of the fridge around the fixing had black dirt trapped in between so putting food on there, which was your only space was not a good idea. The bathroom also had a lot of hairs in it and smelled sweaty. The bed was clean and although comfy one side was not supported properly and so as it was a large bed I was able to sleep in the middle rather than on my side of the bed.

Location perfect but so noisy!
A real mixed bag of a place. We spent two nights here and we struggled to sleep well due to noise from the kitchen and the loud plumbing works of surrounding rooms. The kitchen noise stopped about 1030-11pm, but started again around 6am, so doesn't give you much chance to rest fully after walking all day through the glorious Abel Tasman. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful enough, but could not do anything to change our room as it was full. The location could not be better though and for that we would consider staying again - there is not a lot of other options within this bay. The boat tours pick up 2 mins away and there is a restaurant, bar and shop (closes at 1730) close by. A simple stay with far too much noise, but a great location and helpful staff.

It was good to have own fridge and kettle in the room. They also provided extra heater which was well used :) Communal kitchen it is quite small so it was bit crowded on peak times. Right at the beach that is good in the summer.
Dear Taru, Thank you for your words of compliments, and I am glad the heater served you well. It can get very cold here at night and we don't want our guest freezing. The kitchen is a smaller size when we are fairly busy but a great way to meet travelers and learn different cooking style :) As I am new here I have never had a summer here so I am excited to see the beach during summer, I only hear good things. Busy hotel close to the beach.
After a long day travelling from Westport it was good to unpack and relax. Hotel was buzzing with young Kiwi Experience people. They were lovely but the kitchen was crowded. Also in town was the Godzone supporters. The beach was beautiful and the sunset so gorgeous. It was good to sit on the beach and drink it in.

Stayed here on the way to Abel Tasman Park, where we hiked the next morning. Room was nice and clean, had extra bunk beds we didn't need. Whole residential floor was marked with a no alcohol sign. But there is a bar downstairs.

December 2014 stay
Requested 2 x Double rooms which included fridge, tea/coffee and toiletries. Unfortunately, one of the rooms did not have a fridge or tea/coffee, plates or soap, despite what was advertised. Also the kitchen only opens after 7:30am which is an issue if you want to leave early. Otherwise, the stay was ok.
