Pros:
Staff was friendly and helpful. We'd called earlier since we would be arriving after hours, and were told that they would leave us the key. However, when we got there, we realised there was a mixup with them not having left us the key, but they were able to sort it out quickly
Very convenient location, right across from beach and next to restaurants and beach shops. Boating trips pick you up less than 5 mins walk away.
Cons:
Mattress seemed very old and uncomfortable and would sink in when you sat / slept on it, till you could feel the springs.
No toiletries provided, even though we had a private room with ensuite bathroom.
Communal kitchen wasn't very clean.
No free WiFi and has to be bought separately.
We stayed during a heatwave (close to 34C) in the South Island. Fan provided was a joke, you had to sit less than a foot from it to feel the fan breeze. We had to open the windows, but there was no breeze since there are buildings around the hotel, also, since they don't have any screen on the windows, we had quite a few insects crawling in. Also, open windows meant that we were kept awake by all the folks chatting outside late into the night.
Basically, this is like a hostel. Even if you get a private room with ensuite bathroom, don't expect more than a hostel. Overall, didn't feel like it was good value for the cost of the room.
