“can not wait to go back”

perfect location right on the beach and central to the authentic Greek village in all a lovely location. the manageress and staff extremely friendly , nothing too much trouble . accomodation and facilities excellent and good food. Its a pity the hotel is not open during the winter months as the scenery is breathtaking

“Good, relaxing location - comfortable hotel”

Clean hotel, friendly staff. Very good location - on the beach. Resort is small, but with a good selection of tavernas and shops (even a supermarket!).

“Beuatiful Hotel & Beach”

Kalyves Beach Hotel is right on the beach, has 2 swimming pools, a bar and morning and evening meals. Several restaraunts and tavernas are within walking distance. The town is tourist oriented and most store and shop clerks speak English. Chania is only 15 km away and is much more expensive, but wonderful to tour during the day. The room's A/C was a little weak by American standards, but a fan can be purchased in Kalyves for about 20 Euro to help circulate the cold air. The hotel staff speaks English and are very accomodaing of every request. The beach is only about 30 yards from the hotel and is magnificent. The hotel serves a good continental breakfast (included) and an outstanding dinner buffet with chef prepared Greek and American cuisine. I recommend paying the additional money to get a sea view room. Beutifully landscaped and tastefully decorated. Be sure to be back in the hotel by sundown to watch the swallows put on an acorobatic airshow around the hotel and pools. We will definately be going back next year.

“Good location, great staff, rooms ok”

I'm a good sleeper, but the beds certainly were not comfortable. The bathroom borders the hall way, there is no fan and you have a window that tilts open to the hall way (ie all the air from bathrooms drifts into the hallway). The shower is about 24" square, so it's much easier to just move the curtain away and let the water drain on the main floor. The good: Our plan was half board, so we got "free" buffet for breakfast and dinner. Lots of variety, fresh food and even at 8:15pm when the buffet closes at 8:30 they are putting out new dishes. Plenty of meat choices, tons of fresh fruit and vegetables, good sweets etc. The staff was great. Always attentive and happy to see you in the morning. Always willing to help out. We stayed the week they were closing for the season, so the beach was in good, but not great condition. Plenty of cigarette butts in the sand and the water was a bit cold. Great sunrises, great sunsets and tons of places within walking distance for snacks, beer, dinners, etc. They told me this is a popular location for German tourists, which I believe. There were very, very few visitors who spoke English and most of the shop owners had very broken English. Most shops don't take credit cards so have Euros on hand. The hotel is close to Ancient Aptera and the WWII cemetery and only 30 minutes from the airport. This is not a honeymoon location unless you aren't modest at all. The walls are very, very thin.

“returned again”

We’ve stayed at the hotel a number of times. With children and now as people looking for a more relaxed holiday. The hotel really caters for children and has a play area and two pools with shade! Worst point for me was the bathroom which was clean and well looked after, however the shower area is very small. If you can get past that, and many people do, the rest of the hotel is great. The hotel staff are professional and helpful. In particular Penelope on the main desk really helped make our stay easier, Thank you! The food was plentiful and had the quality of what I expect and look forward to in traditional Greek cooking. The cook catered successfully for fairly large numbers of people from different nationalities and always had a smile on her face. The hotel is next to the beach with easy access and provides free sun beds and umbrellas which is a real saving as the little additions can soon add to the cost. The town is small and quiet. A few tavernas and useful local shops. Easy access to the town Xania reached by the local bus (limited times a day) or by heading to the national road and stopping one of the many busses that pass. Rythmnon is reached the same way but head east.It sounds challenging but it is relatively easy. It is a kilometre walk to the road though. We have been coming to Greece since the mid 70’s (worked in Athens for three years). There are only a few places we revisit and we have been here a number of times! Which says it all really.

“not impressed”

Were on half-board but stopped eating there after 1 day, as food choice and quality was terrrible. Most guests, including us, end up eating out every evening. Basically, the management was doing food on the cheap and hope to get away with it! 1 star hotel in our judgment. Another curiosity: hotel guests are mainly Scandinavians. No comparison to a hotel in Cyprus (went there in April), where we simply could not stop eating the mind boggling variety of food on offer! However, we visited and loved all the beaches in Crete. Also the drives through tortuous mountain roads and tiny villages were a real challenge (forget the Alps).
