Property Amenities

Castle Poipu Shores, a Condominium Resort comprises 39 condominium units housed in three white-stucco, two- and four-story buildings. Overlooking the pool is a party room containing a soft-drink machine, food-preparation counters, a sink, and two dining sets. Behind the buildings is a barbecue area. Wireless Internet access is available in some public areas, at no charge.

A mile west is famed Poipu Beach, considered one of America's best beaches. The S-shaped beach's lower loop is protected by a man-made reef, so water is calm. The upper loop offers surfing/boogie boarding. In between, there's great snorkeling among lava rocks around a small sand islet. To the east is Shipwreck Beach for surfing and beach walking.

Rooms

Rare for condominium resorts on Kauai, all units face the ocean so it can be seen from inside units as well as from their patios and balconies. Each unit contains a living/dining room and a fully equipped kitchen. A washer/dryer and iron/ironing board come in handy.

Condos at this Poipu resort include cable TV and a VCR. Decor varies, but all units are suitably island-style. Ceiling fans and ocean breezes cool the rooms instead of air conditioning.

“Run-Down Property...Very Loud Waves”

Other reviews describe the rooms as "typical of Hawaiian condos". This was not our experience. We found the rooms to be generally more run-down than others in similar (or many cases lower) price range. Carpets were badly stained, and vinyl floors showed a lot of damage. The whole place seemed generally very worn and outdated, including bathrooms, bed linens, and living room furnishings. These features may be isolated to our specific unit, but we did ask to see a second unit and it was very similar. Regarding location, this property is very convenient to the main draws of the Poipu and Koloa areas. It's an easy 15-minute walk to Poipu beach, which is small but has decent snorkeling and lots of sea turtles. There were also sea turtles swimming 20-30 yards from our patio pretty much at all times, which was fun. Finally, a word on those crashing waves. This place is LOUD, especially if your unit is next to the little inlet right beside the swimming pool, like ours. About every 2 minutes a huge wave comes in like a cannon shot. These are not "soothing waves gently rolling up onto the shore". They are "I can't hear myself think" waves, especially if you dare open your patio door to let in some breeze (as there is no AC). I found the constant loud noise to be a little hard on my nerves, and it was definitely tough to sleep (see reference to cannon shots). Next time we'd stay longer in Princeville, and look for a different property in Poipu.

“Best location but bad service”

Best view and location but there offer no service. We stayed three nights but they didn't clean our room at all. We have to request for clean towels everyday. Hotel is very old and not so clean. However view from pool and our room was so nice.. Don't forget to stop by salt pond beach in west side and Kee beach in north end.

This Comdo is in a great location! Steps away from the beach and located right on the ocean! You can hear the waves crash! The units were dated but very clean! The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

“Breathtaking views from our unit.”

We were blow away when we entered our condo (402A) and saw the view. To our surprise and joy we were upgraded to a two-bedroom ocean view room. We had booked a one-bedroom ocean view. The master bedroom looks onto the ocean with an almost floor to ceiling window. I am a light sleeper and was at first concerned with the sound, sometimes quite load, of the waves crashing onto the rocks directly below. But, by the third day the sound lulled us to sleep. We enjoyed watching the sea turtles paddle by below. The beach ( Poipu Beach) is a short walk away. There are also two shopping centers, and the old town of Koloa close by. The lady who was in the office was friendly and answered our questions and give us tips on where to go and what to see. I cannot wait to go back and would definitely stay here again.

Area recommendations
Poipu- Because of the beaches, the weather (less rain) and the proximity of shopping centers that are close by.

“A little outdated - but the ocean front makes up for it”

Upon check-in, we were pleasantly surprised to find out we'd been upgraded to a 2 bd/ 2 ba unit. The ocean view is truly an ocean view. You are literally just feet away from the ocean and we enjoyed sitting on the balcony watching the waves crash in. The shore is very rocky, so it's not a beach front - however a nice kid-friendly beach is less than a 5 minute walk away. The unit itself is fully stocked with all the necessities and more. The bathrooms and bedrooms are rather "no frills" but are clean and comfortable. The exterior of the building is a little dated- the effects of the ocean air are evident in the corroded / rusty railings and balconies, etc. If you can get passed this though, the location is awesome. We would stay there again.

Getting around
You definitely need to rent a car. Restaurants are rather spread out and many are beyond walking distance. Also, many of the attractions (Waimea Canyon, Hanalei Bay, etc) are miles away but easily accessible by car. Renting a car is much cheaper than using one of the tour companies.
Nightlife
There didn't seem to be a lot of night life on the island. I think this spot is best if you just want to relax.

Take a Helicopter Ride
Getting around
I would recommend renting a car this is the best way to see the island because you can do what you want when you want and everything is easy to find and get to on the island. also take a helicopter tour of the island well worth the money. also these condos had a full kitchen so best bet go to wal mart and get food cook and eat at condo it will save you lots of money.

“Beautiful Views and Great Location”

Condo was very comfortable and the views were spectacular! Our stay as from 4/6 through 4/14. We did spot whales on several occassions, also turtles, and spinner dolphins from our lanai. It was so relaxing at night to hear the waves crashing in on the rocks below. We will definetly stay at this property again.
