“Fern Grotto Inn, Almost Perfect”

My husband and I loved this property. It is small, convenient, and intimate. We enjoyed the fact that there are only four cottages on the property and that the growns were like a backyard at home. The location is perfect (about halfway between Lihue and Kapaa), across the road from a lovely beach, across the river from Smith Family Gardens, and 100 paces from the Wailua River Tours. The only drawback to the Fern Grotto Inn is that it is not a resort. We didn't have maid service during our stay, but we did have to pay a $100.00 cleaning fee. So be sure to budget that into your travel expenses (we didn't, because the bill came the day we were checking out). We had to use the cash we were going to use to pay the extra baggage fee from the airlines (put that on credit card). If wouldn't have been a big deal if we had known. I wouldn't have spent 3-hours cleaning the cottage that morning and would have left it the way it was when we woke up. I don't want to be negative, because the rest of the trip was perfect. I just don't like expensive surprises.

Area recommendations
We really enjoyed the East Shore (Coconut Coast) because it is convenient and not too touristy. The Poipu (South Shore) area is nice with lots of resorts and things to do. It looks very family friendly with a great kids beach on one side of the beach and a good snorkeling area just across a sand bar. The North Shore is beautiful with many resorts. When we return, we'll go with the East Shore again because we liked the attitude of the people.
Dining
Places to eat: breakfast; Ono Family Restaurant in Kapaa for lunch we usually packed a picnic Dinner: Wahoo (excellent seafood and view of the coconut forest) Wailua/Kapaa The Eastside (excellent seafood and view of the beach) Kapaa Scott's BarBQue (really great view and right on the ocean) Kappa Brenneke's (pretty good food/great view, but don't let them talk you into their MaiTai's) Poipu Monica's Tacqueria (excellent Mexican food and I grew up in El Paso, TX) Kapaa.
Events and shows
We went to the Smith's Family Luau. The food was excellent. The show was good. I have to admit that we have been to Tahati twice and the festivals at the Tahitian Village is far superior. That being said, everybody needs to go to a Luau at least once in their life.
Outdoors or beach
Our favorite beach was Tunnels Beach on the North Shore. Great snorkeling, great people watching, great sand, and they even have a catering vehicle so that you can get food and drink. We loved the Na Pali boat tour. I think the name was Na Pali Catamaran, but they are the only ones out of Hanalei. It was the second choice in the Ultimate Guide, but I really don't see how the others could be any better. The guides were very knowledgeable and personable. The snorkeling was great and we went into some of the caves. It was a blast.

“A charming slice of paradise!!! HIGHLY recommended!”

The Fern Grotto Inn is the perfect place for a quiet, romantic getaway. If you are looking to be lodged in the heart of a tourist nightmare; this IS NOT the spot! If you are looking for a touch of old Kauai & a chance to experience the tranquility that the islanders know as home; you have found your destination! You wake to the sound of roosters crowing outside your window every morning. The owners are on-site in their own cottage & amazingly friendly & helpful. They have put a lot of effort into making this feel just like home. Nice hardwood floors, large tiled shower & comfy furnishings right down to the pillows. The list of ammenities is quite lengthy! There is a "beach shed" w/snorkel gear, boogie boards, water shoes, chairs & coolers. Take what you need & return it when you are done. Saves tons of $$! Lydgate beach is right across the street. My husband & I took this trip to get married & honeymoon. We were going to exchange vows at the beach, but it was raining sparatically which made it hard to negotiate a clear block of time. We loved the location/view of the Wailua River just outside our cottage so much, that we had our ceremony right outside overlooking the River. The Fern Grotto Inn offered much more that we could have expected in the way of relaxation & comfort. We will definitely return on subsequent trips to Kauai!

Traveler's tip
Perfect location on the East side which allows you easy & quick access to either the North or South Shore with a minimal drive. Very close to Coconut Market Place, Java Kai (excellent coffee & pastries). If you like burgers, you MUST go to Bubba Burger in Kapaa. Located in the driveway just before the Inn is the building where you can buy your tickets for flat bottom boat rides to the Fern Grotto & tickets for the traditional Luau at the Smith's Family Tropical Paradise Plantation.
